    Alright, what’s a red nun?

Nicknames for the channel marking buoys. The red ones are nuns, and the green ones are cans.

I’ve always wondered why they are called nuns. They look more like bishops than nuns to me, but then again, I’m not catholic.

and the shapes are good to know for the night fisherman. At dusk, it’s hard to see the color, but knowing the shape and knowing the nuns are on your starboard side going up stream will keep you out of the wing dams.

If you don’t pay attention to the nuns and hit a wingdam you will have to go talk to the priest about the words that just came out of your mouth!

I survived my first attempt at night fishing tonight – thanks again for all the input on doing this safely. I didn’t find any red nuns with my boat but also didn’t find any walleyes either. Spent the evening/night hours working shallows (2-8ft) near and into the vermilion river with one smallie to show for it. Used variuos colors of moxies and pulse r’s with no luck. I’m not giving up even though I usually leave the river feeling defeated. I enjoy the scenery too much which is what keeps bringing me back!
