Anyone have any suggestions for replacement line on my jigging, and pitching rods for river walleye’s? I got very frustrated with twisted line looping around my rod tip all day Saturday. I’ve tried many differernt options, but none have worked well.

I’ve never pitched with anything but Hi Viz mono since getting to know James Holst and Dustin Stewart…thats what they use and they’re pretty fair sticks…

Monos to use (all 6# test…flo orange or flo green)
    Cortland Endurance (Deans tackle box)
    Sufix Elite or Siege

I’ve made the switch to Nanofil. Almost no memory…and no stretch.

My first question to you would be what size reel are you using? if it is a very tiny (ultra-light)reel you need to “upsize”. Secondly how heavy a jig or weight are you using? I personally use 4# gold mono, however in your case I think 6# would be fine, the harder you work a heavier bait on an undersized reel the quicker the line twist. Try to downsize your presentation with a medium size reel. Hope this helps…

    Tom nailed it.
Sufix or corland I used both suffix strong as hell corland good but careful tying knots. I been using cortland 2 year happy with it so far. mono better for picting than braid swings in water better doesnt snag as much an dmore time in strike zone.

10# power pro high viz yellow braid. You can take a sharpie and mark the last foot black if needed. Man that stuff is so sensitive and it will last a full season of fishing every day before needing replaced. Best of all, no line twists what so ever.

The 10# power pro has the same diameter as 2# mono.

You mention line twist and that may be your problem. No matter what mono you use at some point you will probably get some line twist—sooner if you vertical jig. When that happens pick a quiet stretch of river—not easy to find this time of year—head upstream at a slow pace –take your jig off and let out a bunch of line behind the boat. Close the bail and just let the line trail behind the boat for a couple of minutes. Reel in and your line twist should be gone. James mentions this in one of his early videos and it has always worked for me.

Im a fan of the 10/2 power pro also. Good line that holds up. Good balance of strength and line diameter. It is thick enough that it does not let those jigs go straight to the bottom right now in low flow. Then again it will also be thin enough this summer to allow a decent sink rate.

As Rich said you may need to straighten out those mono lines in the river ever now and again.

I like suffix elite 6 pound for two reasons… The line spools on very well, and the day I switched from Trilene my clients break offs where nearly eliminated…

I run 8 lb Sensation Flo green on my spinning rods and 10-12 lb P-Line on my baitcasters. All pitching/casting/dragging jigs/plastics. Getting to the point where I have more baitcasters than spinning rods. Definitely grab the baitcaster more than the spinning rod these days.
