Hi, I’ve never had the chance to go out and chase fish during the ice fishing season down there. I’d like to try next weekend, after inland waters close (providing ice is safe). For a guy who is primarily a pike guy during the winter, are there some very general tips that I might gleam from an experienced angler? Not looking for anything specific, just something to get pushed in the right direction… I haven’t even jigged in years..

try and find current, its a big flat fish can be anywhere, just about any walleye presentation works(jiggin raps, sweedish pimple, buck shot, chubby darters, and so on) dont forget to be simple too with a hook and minnow. you may catch some nice crappies with that rig too. there are not any spot on spots out there according to structure but there will be spot on spots that fish are…… just keep moving tell you find fish then fish on them they will have flurries, they wont bite for a while then in 5 min you can catch your limit. good luck. P.S. the ice north of the point will ussually get bad before the ice south of the point, so be careful if you travel up. and dont walk directly over the point walk on shore or close to shore to go up.

I can give ya a little info. If you are planning on getting on the lake at methodist point then as you walk on the ice the point is to your left! Every year there is a nasty pressure ridge that runs out from the point.

STAY AWAY FROM THE PRESSURE RIDGE! just head straight out from the landding and go out 300 yards that should put ya in 20+ feet of water jiggin raps work good as do some jigggin spoons. this year a minnow under a bobber has been good. good luck. be safe.

About 300 yards out on Thursday there were three distinctly sperated pods of anglers by 9AM. Two groups were above the big crack/pressure ridge. People are fishing further out than the last couple of years so the low flow now may be widely spreading the fish over the flat. I saw one wheeler out there, others walked.

The ice can change down there quickly so pay attention to what others are doing.

We were there last wknd and the open water near landing is getting worse. There are pockets to the north and south that are open all together. I will take a drive by tomorrow to see if it is even fishable for you. The ice with this rain may be pretty poor! You must go straight out at least 300 yrds as to the left of the landing is really opening up and the ridge is getting very weak and wide.

Is it worth checking this weekend without a boat. I had planned on an early trip Sunday?

There are people out there fishing. There was 1 wheeler out there too. Either they were brave or crazy. An inch of slop on the ice and the shoreline is pulling away. If I were to venture out I would be wearing my floaties on my arms and my duck ring around my waist.
