This is just a quick update on pool 5. The action on pool 5 is in great shape right now. A lot of good fish are bring caught this week. I was out breaking the new boat in on Wednesday and caught 3 nice keepers in one trolling pass. I talked with others and they said they have been having the same results. One guy I talked to said the had 7lbers and one 11lber. There were no pictures but came from a pretty reliable source.

If you are looking to get away from the Red Wing Pressure Pool 5 this week will treat you right. I will be on pool 5 on friday and sunday and pool 4 saturday. If you see a while dual console lund with a white 200 Evinrude stop and say hi.

    Fireflick,

I might take you up on that offer to try Pool 5. With the crowds and inconsistent bite on Pool 4, Alma’s not sounding too bad.

Never been on Pool 5 before, though, and was wondering if you could point out a few starting spots for a new guy. Is it a “head to the dam” thing like Red Wing or is there some action downstream? Also, I’ve seen the bait shop mentioned a few times, but I’m not sure where it is. Same with the ramp.

    Thanks in advance.

The Main Channel bait shop is on the north side of main street, right across the road from an old kwik Trip store. I think it is a few buildings west of the bank on the same side of the road. Easy to see and plenty of parking along Main St.

The landing is on the east end of town behind the feedmill and by the power plant. It is a beautiful landing, although very narrow.

If I were going there tomorrow I’d likely try some wingdams from the power plant to the dam. I’d not shy away from the dam either as I have had great success there at times.

You can’t compare Alma to Red Wing as far as the river is concerned. Alma is much louder and much larger. The current is usually stronger as well. I use 1/2 ounce jigs a lot in Alma wheras they feel like an anvil in Red Wing.

There can be some great fishing below the power plant as well. Usual spots such as wingdams and sand flats.

    Good luck!

I was on pool 4 on saturday and saw good numbers but no size. Most of my time was spent above Evert’s trolling three ways and cranks. A slow creeping speed was the best.

Pool 5 on sunday was really good for the ol man. He had his limit of keeper walleyes in just a couple hours pulling three way and cranks around wingdams. Most of our time on pool 5 right now has been in the first mile of the dam.

Like riverratt said there is a lot of current in Alma right now. Big jigs or heavy three ways will be your best presentation. When lowlight conditions come head to a wingdam or sandflat with a little current on them. On friday I caught a 6lber.(picture will be on fishing report sometime tonight hopefully.)
