I am more of a hunter than a fisherman, with that being said I know I cant shoot someone else’s limit of Ducks or geese. What my question is relates to fishing regs. in mn. Could I legally catch my limit of fish and a fishing partners limit of fish also ?

In WI you have to catch your own fish,no sharing, you can party ,but no party fishing!

Party fishing is now legal in MN.
Do you know when this came to be ???
February 17, 2012 at 2:14 am #1039955So now for some more ‘grey area’.
1) You decide you don’t want to mess around cleaning your limit when you get home so you give them to your buddy (both from MN) to enjoy.
* He gets pulled over on the way home and has 2x limits of fish and the MN legal daily / possession limits are same = 1x.
* Can he explain the situation and have you verify it with the CO?
* OK – he goes home and cleans both limits and puts them in the freezer for a fish fry at a later date.
* Can you go fishing the next day/week/month and LEGALLY reduce a fish to YOUR possession until you know and can prove that your buddy has consumed those fish you caught together?2) You decide to give the poor widow across the street a nice limit of cleaned walleyes you caught because you know her family loves a fish fry.
* Can you LEGALLY go out the next day/week/month and reduce a fish to YOUR possession until you know and can prove that the neighbor lady has eaten those fish you gifted to her?Fun and games….
barcFebruary 17, 2012 at 2:23 am #1009278Keyword in your questions Barc is possession.
If you gave fish away, they are not in your possession.
I am not a CO and I don’t ever want to play one on TV. Too many gray rules.

Really? Not to doubt your word but the fish/game you caught/killed are not a part of your possession limit because you gifted them to another person/party?
barcFebruary 17, 2012 at 5:30 am #1039974Page 9 of the 2011 regs:
• A party is defined as a group of two or more persons:
– angling from a single watercraft; or
– if not in a watercraft, maintaining unaided visual and vocal contact
with each other.
• The total number of fish possessed by the party may not exceed the
combined limits of the numbers of the party.
• Each party member may transport only an individual limit of fish.February 17, 2012 at 5:33 am #1039975

Not sure when, but it’s legal now.
… and no grey area whatsoever.
February 17, 2012 at 6:07 am #1039977Also on page 9 of the MN 2011 regs.
Possessing Fish
• Daily and possession limits are the same unless otherwise noted. Fish are
in an angler’s possession whether on hand, in cold storage, in transport, or elsewhere. So just because you give your fish away does not necessarily mean they are not in your possession. They are still your possession elsewhere. Thats how I read it.
Page 11
A person who stores fish for another must plainly mark the package, in ink, with the name, address, and fishing license number (or DNR number or transaction number) of the owner, and the number of fish by species in the package
Page 3.
. The daily and possession limits include fish possessed by the person at all locations including such places as livewell, cold storage, at home, or at a resort.
Daily limit is the number of fish an angler can take in one calendar day.
Eating those fish or gifting them away on the same day does not allow an angler to possess additional fish taken in the same calendar day.And how to legally gift fish to another person. Page 13
• Lawfully taken fish may be transferred as a gift if accompanied by a receipt
containing: name and address of the owner, name and address of recipient, date of transfer, description of the gift, and license number (DNR number or transaction number) under which the fish was taken. The receipt must remain with the gift. The recipient cannot possess more than the statewide possession limit. What it does not state about gifting of fish is when you gift the fish who’s limit is it until consumed? Above it states the fish is the possession of the person who caught it even if kept else where.
February 17, 2012 at 12:14 pm #1039998I think the key here is that while these laws, or any type of laws for that matter, may have loopholes, I for one do not believe that the CO’s are out to “get” us.
There seem too many people that think that law enforcement is out to get them. Typically these are people that really have something to hide. If you think you can go out and catch numerous limits, give your catches to several of your buddies to try to disperse it “legally”, only to take it back to have it for yourself, that shoud be illegal. And thankfully, it is.

Believe me there is at least one CO here in Se Mn that has the attitude that every sportsman he comes in contact with is hiding something or has done some thing illegal and is guilty until proven innocent. I wont mention his name but some of you know who Im talking about.

I was really surprised to see them at my home but actually it wasn’t that big of deal, I knew I had nothing to hide and other then going through my frig and freezers it really wasn’t a big deal, they did however conficate over 40lbs of venision because friends donated it to me and it didn’t have proper ID with the meat, after the DNRs investgation the venision was returned back to me. The DNR was just doing there job on a tip and I just let them do there job, its all good!
