I was on my way home from work (with no intentions of going fishing because I was supposed be driving a trailer down to my dad’s place in Rochester) when I called Denver to see how the catching was. To my surprise, Denver was waiting for me to get off of work so he could see if I wanted to head down to the river. Apparently he had exhausted all other potential fishing partners. I told him I couldn’t, but after I hung up it didn’t take two minutes for me to change my mind. My dad also agreed that fishing on a 45° day in February was more important than his snowmobile trailer. So we were off…

We got down to the river around 5 and were fishing by 5:30. It wasn’t 5 minutes into our first dragging pass and we had a double. My dad hooked up with a nice a 17 incher, and I set the jig into a 25 1/2 fatty. This fish was not that long, but the belly on this fish said: “please let me go so I can drop a few hundred thousand eggs”. We obliged and she gave me a refreshing splash of water to the face as she swam away. By the time we left, we had boated 13 fish. I think all but 1 or 2 were over 17″. One thing I cannot get over is how hard these fish smack baits. Prior to fishing the river, all I fished were lakes. The bites were always suttle. I seriously doubt that I will ever tire of feeling these walleyes smack the crap out of a bait.

A boat speed of .4-.7 up stream was working well for us. Jig sizes were 3/32 – 3/16. Everyone had a different setup, so we had to choose the right jig size that got us in the zone. Our jig colors of choice were all over the board, purple glitter -> bright orange. Same goes for ringworm colors. No one color was hotter then the other. We focused on rock and sand structure between the back channel ramp and the dam.

The long range forecast looks a little chilly, so it was a good thing we got out! Thanks for the fun time guys!

P.S. I think we all need to go to “picture taking” school.

Nice post and pics… Nice to see many P-4 winter anglers releasing the egg laden fatties to “do their thing” later this spring!
