It will work at any time of the year, just better at some times compared to others.
If I remember my notes correctly, somewhere in that 40 to 50 degree water temp range is when things start to pick up.
I havent done a lot of 3-way trolling so maybe some others with a little more expertise will chime in (other than RRR )

Would running three ways with plastic trailers instead of sticks be an option when the wate is cooler than 40 degrees? I seem to remember the 40-50 degree range was optimal for sticks.
February 8, 2012 at 1:20 pm #1036607Using a #2 hook with a ringworm (or 3/4) ringworm in a 3 way configuration is a secret trick that’s not talked about in the open forums.
Only in dark alley’s or by private message to a very very select few that know the handshake.

Answers like this make me wonder if you are reverting from the dark side.

February 14, 2012 at 12:35 pm #1038705I found a write up Marty Hahn did on 3 waying sticks. It’s on his website. Gives some good info.
February 14, 2012 at 1:30 pm #1038726When it comes to 3 waying sticks–and most other presentations—-Marty has forgotten more than most people will ever know. To watch him work an area 3-waying stickbaits is like watching a surgeon perform surgery. I am going to have to go and check out that article. By the way—great name Joe
February 14, 2012 at 1:33 pm #1038727Post the link to his website please. I’m too lazy to google it today.

February 17, 2012 at 9:24 pm #1040234He makes a very good point with that front bait doing better in the cold water! Motionless is key in that cold water. If I learned anything this Nov-Dec is that the longer you pause that thing the better off you are. I am talking 20 seconds to a minnute. Also the 3 way will naturally do this at times when the sinker hangs up and lets loose off the bottom. But if your moving too fast you will not get that action from the 3 way. Loose the weights and it can be deadly with big shallow water eyes in the right conditions too!
