Got a chance to get the boat wet on Saturday so I decided to give Pool 5 a try. The ramp conditions were decent but still plenty of ice from guys not draining their trailers – glad I had brought some salt along.
Started the day about mid-morning and picked up a few eyes pitching and dragging plastic on some shallow (under 15′) sand down river from the power plant but that bite did not last long for me once the fog lifted. One of those eyes is pictured here – healthy fish right at the 15″ mark.
Fished the main channel area between the dam and ramp and picked up a few more walleye and a number of saugers in 17-22′ mostly using a slow drift and just hovering the baits near the bottom. Again, all plastics here.
Paddle tails and ring worms rigged on 1/8 – 3/16 ounce jigs produced with the best bite on those with chartreuse tails. The water is very clear, I could see my bait down about 4-6′ in most areas.
Headed out a little early and did not have an opportunity to try the evening bite. Could have kept a mixed bag limit of walleyes and saugers but opted to keep these 4 nice saugers for a meal. It was just a great day to be on the water
