I drove over 35E and saw quite a bit of open water. Going to have a setback tomorrow; but the rest of the week looks like it will open up even more.

Good to hear that Joel. It would be nice to get back out there this coming week. If not I guess pool 4 is always a option.

Been looking for the right combination of temperatures, free time, and agreeable wife to come together this winter but it just hasn’t happened yet. Maybe next weekend will be the ticket…if not, I’ve got my fingers crossed for a darn early spring!

Hopefully we get some good sun the next day or 2 to beat down on the surface of the water. I would guess those surface temps might not even be above freezing right now. If you spend any time on the river mid winter a few interesting things you may see are fishing open water with water temps below 32 degrees. Think the lowest I have seen is around the 30 degree mark.

Next is water freezing when its well above 32 degree air temps. In the right conditions as soon as the wind stops blowing or the suns rays go down even if the air temps are well above freezing and the water temps are below the river will start to freeze.

Third is how much cold air the river valley around pool 2 will hold. Watch you vehicle thermometers while at the landings. The closer you are to the water the cooler the temps will be. Think Joel mentioned to me one night this winter about temps close to 32 degrees at the landing and hitting low 40s just a couple of blocks away.

Now if the ramps would open up again soon I could quit sitting at the computer thinking about this stuff and go experience it.

And that is why you got to dress like you are going on an arctic adventure. I think I am going to go on a landing tour right now.

Thanks Randy. If our landings are not open Ill be down check the back landing out later this week. The power plant down there must keep pool 4 surface temps a lot warmer than up here. Im surprised that entire back channel does not freeze solid along with many other places of the river.

I was shocked. You can absolutely launch your boat right now on 494 and the river looks wide open and awesome!
I am wondering if some of our friends have been keeping it open. It has been pretty darn cold as of late.

I would be down there Randy if I could. Thanks for keeping the landing open!
