Legal or not I dont like reading about the same person taking limit after limit after limit on the same water I like to fish once in a while. Its not an unlimited resource. I know I’ll get burned for making this statement.

90% of my trips I’m guiding people, they pay money to learn the river, catch and keep fish, I am legal in everyway, I never have over my legal limit in my freezer as a matter of fact last nights catch didn’t even end up in my freezer, I also release all fish over 17″ and even smaller fat females! Didn’t mean to offend anyone, Sorry about that! guess I wont post pics anymore just say how the bite is and no numbers of fish caught, well got to go fishing again tonight to nice out to sit home!

there are dozens of guides on mille lacs, red, lake of the woods, leech lake, and all over the state that have at least one limit of fish in there boat or on the ice nearly every day of the fishing season. river dan is the only guy i’ve found taking them from pool 4 this frequently. i believe pool 4 is every bit the walleye/sauger fishery that most lakes in the state are. If you think its unfair, or not good for the fishery for one guy to take a limit every day i can understand that. but to single out river dan when so many people make a living harvesting fish from the best fisheries is definatly unfair.

maybe river dan will talk in more depth about this drag bite so i can catch a few down there. are you draging upstream or downstream? how do you avoid snags?

Nice fish Dan. How does it work with giving away so many fish? If you give your fish to your clients is it still considered your limit or is it now part of their limit? Im assuming when you said those fish did not make it to your freezer then you must of sent them with who ever you where fishing with. I dont keep many fish but see the practice of giving fish away is still very common. Have always wondered how that works with limits and whos fish it actually is.

Might have to try and get down there myself next week if I cant get back on pool 2.

Well I hate to call you out Dan but I too think that you are taking more than you should be. I know your a good guy and you donate most of your fish and thats great but you need to draw the line somewhere. You said “90% of my trips I’m guiding people” well I have been following you and I know this is far from the truth. I dont look down on guides that let thier clients keep a limit thats your job but the guide doesn’t need to keep his everytime too. Here are your stats since January 2nd; You have fished pool 4 ten times (not including today), your boat has kept its legal limit every time, your boat has brought in 96 walleye/sauger, of those 10 days you were by yourself not guiding 5 times, at least 3 and maybe all of the other days you were not guiding you were with your buddys. I would imagine you broke the 100 fish mark tonight. I don’t think you should be trying to feed the world at pool 4’s expense. Just my opinion

For some reason I feel the need to set the records you keep about me straight, I’ve been on the water 14 times, I’ve went solo 3 times and whenever I have someone in the boat, client or friend I receive money for it so I’d call that guiding!

I would be a little concerned about any guide that takes my limit of fish, lays them on the ground and takes a picture. You should be taking pictures of your clients holding fish, not of a limit on the ground. Wonder if the DNR has read these topics yet… you might have greenjeans at the door in the morning.

Now your piling on about how a guy takes pictures? Good grief! It’s easy to see why guys quit posting on IDO.

The guy can’t win for losing it seems. He posts a report and he’s called a liar if there are no photos for proof.
He posts photos with a report and he’s accused of taking too many fish from ‘my’ waters along with ‘cue the wardens’ since he doesn’t show his clients with fish.
I hardly ever post how I do on my fishing trips for various reasons and I don’t take a camera with me, ever. No body knows what I’m up to unless somebody is with me. This thread could count as one of the reasons why.
Perhaps the moderators could come up with a set of reporting and picture taking rules/ethics for everyone here to stick by. Wouldn’t that be nice?

sorry Dan. i am completely embarrassed by the way your are being treated here. There are some good people here that do a good job of helping others but there is a lot of BS to weed through (not that I’m an angel). please keep you skin tough and hip waders high, because I like to see someone actually reporting on the fishing rather than all the “soapbox” threads.

keep up the good work. i can’t beleive it. just completely embarrassed.

    So, the question is

If somebody posts on here several times over a few week period with pictures of fish lined up on the ground that are being taken home without mention who’s they are, who caught them, whether they were guide clients or not. Are we supposed to give everybody the benefit of the doubt and assume that they’re guides?

When most guides post they make mention of their clients or at least that they were out with clients. That alone in my book is enough to make me think that the guide is out harvesting fish ethically and legally.

If I post pictures several times in a few weeks of limits of fish I fully expect that to be questioned, I think it’s reasonable. I won’t call Dan a liar because I have no reason to think he is. I just hope what comes out of this is a reasonable set of expectations.

It hurts nothing to mention that you had clients out, and actually adds to your credibility.

I haven’t seen anybody on this site get on other guides who take pics of their clients with fish, or mention that they had clients out. It also shows that you’re busy and doing this on a regular basis so you are the service to use.

And if somebody wants to consume hundreds of fish, it’s fine as long as they’re within the law. That being said, most people on sites like this don’t do that and are offended when it appears that somebody else is doing just that. The reports are great, pics are great, but in this day and age everybody should know that you’re going to get blasted unless you clarify what was going on.

There’s also a big difference between saying you were out with two buddies and kept 18 fish on four out of five nights, and doing the same with guide clients. We may have jumped down somebody’s throat, hopefully everybody has a better understanding now of how to prevent this from happening again.

Mike, Not that I have been reading the regs. real closely. But I have not read where this has been specifically addressed. I assume that from reading the regs that if YOU catch fish and retain them that it is your possession until consumed. now, there is no way of proving that fish YOU caught that was given to grandma Ethel is not grandma’s possession limit. so legally I would say that so long as every one has a legal limit in possession, it does not matter who caught them.(so long as they were under daily limit laws)

In Wisconsin it’s worse because your possession is two limits. I know of people who keep fish every time they go because they have a license, their wives have licenses, and they keep two limits for each child in their house.

Somebody with a wife and 3 kids, can have 10 limits in their freezer. That’s insane.

Personally, I hate freezing fish as they never taste as good. That, and not having a freezer full of fish is a good reason to go fishing in case the wife ever wants to eat fresh fish. I personally keep about 15-20 Walleyes per year to clean as the three of us never need more than 3 fish to make a meal.

I have neighbors who ask for fish, and locals who know how often I fish. There are very few people that I kill a fish for. I would keep fish for the Grandma Ethel scenario. I do know people that give fish away just to impress others. That’s something I will never do, and hope that others wouldn’t either.

I freeze all my fish and I’m betting they taste just as nice as when they were fresh after all the breading and seasoning is added. I’ve kept catfish fillets for a year in the freezer and they are great. It all depends on how you take care of them when they come to the boat. Some people know how, some don’t.
And I imagine 10 limits in the freezer for a family of five has already been taken into consideration by the DNR when they set limits.
