After hearing about how the river stays open around Monticello in the winter months yesterday the neighbor and I decided to make a quick run up there and check things out. Got to the boat landing there about 3pm and figured we must be in the right spot as there was a few trailers in the parking lot and a number of people fishing from shore and out in the river with waders on. Didnt bring much for tackle with so just started casting from shore with what I have been using on pool 2. 1/8th draggin jigs and a white moxie. Mike decided to go with a hair jig. Took us about a hour of walking the bank and casting to find our 1st fish. It was a small small mouth that hit the white moxie. As it was getting towards dark I was wondering if the walleyes would move in and start feeding in the clear water. The answer was yes. Mike and I picked up 5 quick walleyes and missed a few others right at dark pitch our jigs at the lower end of a run where it was coming into another riffle. Not much for size on the walleyes but still fun to catch.

Not bad for a 1st trip up to this area and I think Ill be back over the winter months to scratch that open water fishing itch again. Might have to bring the waders and a camera next time.

Nice mike! I love the stretch from Monti to thru elk river. Probably have spent most my life chasin fish around there. Lots of good size fish of all species there and not to much pressure since it’s so difficult to navigate by boat
