Winter Sauger Action

The winter Sauger action has officially kicked into gear.

Being in the right place at the right time is still paramount to taking home quality saugers vs. taking home dinks. Having the right bait in the correct presentation sure helps as well.

It looked like the guys all around us catching and boxing dink after dink as we threw 17″-19″ fatty Sauger back in the water.

I don’t think we could have asked for a better day on the water weather wise either. The storm held off until 2:00pm and then the snow started flying. Up until that point it was a balmy 32* and windless. A beautiful day overall.

I can’t take full credit as my partner contributed as well as Louie. Thanks for the pointers Louie.

Nice to meet you out there OtisEyes. Hopefully your afternoon worked out the way you had planned.

Yeah, I’m sure a lot of guys will think that. I guess I should have photo-shopped my secret spot out of the picture.

    Wade-
Now in the interests of full disclosure and forthrite declaration, it must be noted that:
1.this was a unique event and replicating it may be very difficult if not impossible.
    2. it is going to be VERY cold this week and the fishing will most probably shut down.
    3. the cold is EXTREMELY hard on equipment AND fishermen.
    4. Wade is an exceptional fisherman and average or below average fishermen attempting to duplicate his experience are quite likely to be in for a disappointment.

THERE, if anyone else can add more, i would appreciate the help…

Saw you guys out there Dan. Well done on a productive day. Looks like you did better than some of the other guys in that group you were in. The couple boats I talked to said all the could manage were dinks.

    Yup all of 12 rigs.

The “Y” seemed to be producing better then the dam according to a number of reports and live wells. A couple of boats reported 50 to 100 fish day.

It was a very nice day to be on the river. Temps were comfortable without any wind. The bite was on pre snow storm. Not sure how it was after the snow started.

You guys looked like you were having a good time Wade!

What does this even mean ? Can anyone make any sense of this? Are you saying no one other than Wade can catch fish ?

BK and I were out for a very short period of time and had absolutely no problems boating keeper saugers, we also caught channel cats as well. A mixed bag of intentionally caught fish

Nice job Wade and River Dan an absolute great day to be on the water.

Wade you know it’s free to launch at Baypoint and the ramps were dryer It’s good to see that most know to drain the trailer before heading up the ramp

Yeah Jesse. We considered the Back Channel but we had a guy in the group that would likely have had trouble getting to/into the boat walking over the rocks at the back channel. For safety sakes we choose to hit Evert’s on this day.

I’m thinking Stu felt my post was rather arrogant and took offense to it. At least that’s how I took it.

Wow, not a place to try obtuse humor…

I was TRYING to stem some of the tsunami of fisherman that the post will trigger…

No disrespect meant in any manner.

Congrats on a good catch under adverse conditions.

    Goll, sensitive, sensitive, sensitive…

Gotcha Stu. No harm, no foul. My misunderstanding.

That’s the downfall of the internet……..no vocals “tone of voice” and facial expressions.

The only thing I took offense to is Jesse not taking those stinky saugers off my hook for me.

Here’s the first BLADE bait boated fish for me. It was an awesome fight! My partner (that will remain nameless) darn near lost it when he FAILED with the net.

But I recovered to get a picture before boxing ‘er. HEY! People drive 100’s of miles for smelt.

Where did you pull that fish from? I spent all day looking for those. That’s the best meat. Tender like a fawn deer.

Made it out on pool 4 yesterday with fellow IDO’er off of the trip swap forum. Loaded the live well and had a great day. Dealing with 5ins of snow in the drive way and waiting for the packer game. Nice to meet you das_bass. I hope the cheese soup is worth the effort.

Secret spot Wade. Jesse won’t alow unphoto shopped pics of that location.

We need big signs on boats down there saying “I’m an IDO MEMBER!!”

If our boat happened to get close enough to hear me complaining about my fishing partner…that was me.

While some of us aren’t IDO Super Stars. I would think you and Jesse are enough of a star that recognition out on Pool 4 is a given.

I knew I should have followed you guys.

I KNEW IT! I did see you on comedy central a couple weeks ago!

Ya know, sitting in the bait shop in the past, there’s one thing that’s always held true.

If 100 fishermen are out there’s 20 that just have it dialed in (mostly experience, sometimes luck)

60 people will have someplace between decent to slightly above average days…

and there will be 20 that will swear there isn’t a fish in the river.

There’s another truth: no matter how bad the bite is, there’s always someone that connects the dots and gets on fish.

PS Wade, you obviously didn’t notice Jesse with his spotting scope watching you huh?

That’s why he was straining so hard!

It was good to get out again on such a nice day (before the snow).

Seemed like everyone came in all at once when it started snowing.

I really don’t know what’s more fun, maybe it’s a combination of catching fish and seeing old faces and meeting new ones. Well that and talking smart as we inched by other boats.

It was another great day on the river.
