Minnows in the fall – P4?

Okay, so I don’t claim to be the best fisherman on pool 4 but I heard some boats talking at the damn on Saturday. Apparently they were told by someone in a bait shop in Hager City not to buy minnows because the fish weren’t biting on minnows. I didn’t know that walleyes/saugers didn’t bite on minnows in the fall. Can someone please enlighten me? If this is the case, I would love to turn my baitwells into beverage coolers. Thanks.

We were one of the boats talking about it. One boat that launched there went in for minnows and were told not to waste their time or money because the fish weren’t biting anyway.

My boat, and this guys boat proceeded to fill out limits on blade baits, but the guys fishing minnows caught fish also. So there were two non-truths told by the bait shop employee. There were in fact fish biting, and there were plenty of people catching them on minnows, amongst other methods.

No, it wasn’t me. I know better than to listen to anyone dumber than me. I also know better than to buy anything from that place.

There always is a minnow bite. But why waste time with it if the plastic/hair/blade bait bite is just as good or better? Some times they only want meat; but most of the time minnows aren’t any better.

Agreed, and we didn’t have any with. I just couldn’t believe a bait shop employee would refuse to sell them to somebody. I’ve heard Dean tell people how to catch fish without minnows, but never told somebody they couldn’t have them.

I felt bad for the guys who got shut down, because the one guy in the front of the boat was catching all the fish. The guys in the back of the boat were struggling and both said they’d be much more comfortable working a jig and minnow. Those guys should be able to fish the way they want, not have to do without because somebody at the baitshop wanted nothing more than to ruin their day.

That does suck… I think if I was feeling that out of place without something that would give me confidence, I would have ran down river to that place I don’t feel I can mention any longer, and bought a couple dozen. That’s only if I would have let someone at a bait shop “tell” me I couldn’t buy something I already felt strongly about.

As mentioned, Dean was good about pointing out what worked, but then letting you still feel ok with buying what you were also interested in trying. I seemed to walk out with his suggestion, and my comfort zone bait… even though it may not have been used.

Again, lack of communications. You guys were talking walleyes. He was talking White Bass.
