The forecast looks cold for the next week and i don’t like to clean ice out of my minnow bucket, so it looks like tomorrow might be the last nice day of 2011 open water fishing. Before i have to put on my hunting gear to go fishing.

I have read many posts over the last few weeks and all i have seen is Slooooowww fishing for walleye and sauger. If anyone knows of any being found in and amongest redwing i would be open ears. The last time I was down to the river was early may and fishing was great. I’d like to end the year on the same note. Thanks for all of your help!!!!!

Was out for a bit Friday and a good chunk of Saturday around Red Wing/the dam area. A lotta boats out. I caught nothing Friday other than a small sauger and two big bowfin/dogfish (yikes, those are some ugly fish). Saturday was a bit better, but not by much. One decent eye, couple crappie. Jig and minnow. Sure seemed to be real light biters for me.

I was out from 4 ish to 7 pm yesterday, Sunday using the Marcum camera.

I was wondering how much I could see this early (or late) in the year, so I dropped the camera down without having the video recorder connected. I should know better.

Just as it hit the bottom a nice size shovelnose gave me the best shot of the night.

But on to saugers. I cameraed from the scour hole down stream to the 3 (exposed) wing dam, both sides of the river. I did not go above the sand bar on the WI side as there were people fishing over there and didn’t want to disturb any fish that might be there.

I did not see one sauger or walleye.

Carp/Flathead/Shovelnose/and suckers…but not one big or small walleye/sauger. That’s the first time this has ever happened, but then I normally don’t have a camera down this time of year.

One thing I did notice. The Marcum temperature read 56 degrees on the surface and 57 degrees at the bottom. I’ve always assumed that the water gets mixed at the dam. It might not as much as I once thought.

One disclaimer, I didn’t see any channel cats either, but I know they are there.

Just finished 3 days fishing hard from Everts to the Dam… The poorest end of October in 10 years… There just aren’t many fish up there yet… period.
Lots of dink Sauger and a handful of male Eyes… The guys sitting on the sand all day soaking minnows are getting limits of 12-14″ Sauger with a few 16-17s…

What they are doing to the Dam area is sad… the whole Wisc side has been wiped out…the wing dam/flat across from the Vermilion is GONE!

I agree with Tom- I fished 2 full days last Thursday and Friday with only 10 legals over the 2 days ranging from 15-24 inches. Weekend before that a little better big fish wise, but numbers lower. I can’t figure out if the fish are on the move, or if it’s a clarity issue/construction, or both. Caught fish on everthing- hair blades, plastics, cranks, minnows, but could establish no pattern, and could not find a solid concentration of fish. Fished everywhere from IN the lake to the dam both days. It can only get better-
I too, am bummed about the wisconsin shoreline. Good luck everybody and be safe if you are running any cuts- I had a close call-

I had the same luck at Hay Creek. Nuthin. Given it’s still so slow from bay point all the way to the dam, think they’re still down further around colvill/can line yet? I haven’t heard any reports from that area recently, though I’ve seen quite a few boats in the lot.

The can line has been sloww also. Fish are few and far between. Never know though today they could be in there. They gotta go threw that area to get to the dam, unless they are going to winter in the lake and in that case I wil drill holes for em this winter.
