Went family catching yesterday in the backchannel. Great fun! Bobbers, small jigs, and minnows — doesn’t get any better! Kept as many sunnies and crappies as we needed and put a bunch back to swim.
But the reason for my post is to share what happened in my brain–I did some research on my bank spot. Finding out the WHY fish bite in certain areas is always a toughie for me. So, this light-bulb type of moment was HUGE!
Drove the boat with the HB SI over my shore spot to get a grasp of why they are there (Oh yeah, caught three walleyes 23″,19″,12″ and a white bass last night with my wife–she caught a huge white bass too and she has big walleye fever).
Found out the spot on the spot is upriver of a 12 foot drop off and rises to 6 feet. As we watch the sun set, the shad get pushed to the shallow water and it’s a feeding frenzy. Also, the shallow spot has three distinct roller-coaster variations. The key was to roll the jig over those humps and drop it into the trough. I sort of knew this from casting–now I know for sure.
Plastics haven’t taken off yet for me. Hair jigs have ruled supreme…sometimes meat sometimes not.
Some people are just content to go catch ’em and that is cool. But knowing WHY the fish are there makes it so much sweeter for me!
I must give a shout out to Dean for helping me with the WHY fish bite here or there or on this or that lure. I would never be at the fish-catching stage that I am (very much middle of the road) without his guidance over the years.
