After fishing pool 2 all spring and summer I have been switching it up the past few outings by hitting pool 3. The first two outings produced “a lot” of box fish between 15″ and 22″. Yesterday, I fished from sun-up to sun-down. The action was slowwwwwwww to say the least. I only had 5 fish at 5:30. I was trying everything. Trolling cranks and 3-ways with a jig and worm, pitching, vertical jigging, wing dams, rip rap, cuts, sand flats, etc… I was feeling defeated. I was actually thinking about heading home, but thought “you have already been here all day night, might well stay another 1.5 hours”.
So… I decided to setup shop on a wing dam that had been productive on my previous two outings and OMG! From then until sundown I boated 5 more fish, including a 27″ & 28″ walleye and a 39″ pike. The walleyes were the “fattest” fish I have seen in person. Their heads look tiny sitting on their shoulders. The pike was no slouch either. Another super fat fish. When I was battling the pike, I was thinking “this is it, this is the one”. Sadly, not so but still a great fish. It just goes to show that “one more spot” can make all the difference.
The fish at the end of the evening came on a #5 shadling in black shad. The two big walleyes came off the tip and the pike was right next to shore. In the past couple of weeks I have seen some pictures of beautiful fishing being caught. The big girls are stuffing their faces. Get out there and wet a line.
Pic 1: 28″,pic 2: 27″, pic 3: 39″. I have to figure out how to do self-portraits. Fish on the bottom of the boat just doesn’t do them justice. How do other people do self-portraits? Do you have a camera mount on your boat and just know where you need to stand?
