The banks along Pool 4 (river and Pepin) are ripe for bank fishing…not so many boulders and you can find a sandy spot here and there.
The last two nights have been crazy for big walleyes! I only went banking because I had about 45 minutes to fish…but it was great! Caught and kept one 17. Released 5 fish over 20″ — biggest was 24″. The guys next to me had 5 fish that were big as well.
Tuesday night, sadly, one 21″ was bleeding so bad she wouldn’t swim. The jig was so far back in the roof of her that I must have hit something. I had to keep her. Blood everywhere. But the body contents were cool. Three shad over 4 inches long, several small ones, and a good amount of eggs. No wonder she is on the feedbag!
Early in the evening (I started fishing at 5:55 and went to 6:40) they bit on glitter green with firecracker/char. tail ringworm. As it got darker, the purple hair and brown hair jigs–no meat–were the ticket.
I think these girls are moving! Get out now!
And nearly all the fish came from shallow water – 3 to 5 feet.
