It has been a year since I have been over to the river. I see that Dean is gone. Is Everetts still the place to launch, pick up some bait and access some nice boat ramps? Just looking for an unbiased opinion OR NOT?

They won’t Get a cent from me. I’ll be finding a new place to launch if I get the itch to fish P4.

I’d hope that it was for a good reason that everyone is having those opinions I’ve read over and over since he left, vs the change that Dean was gone. Understand he made it special… and I enjoyed the few times I met him as well, but if it is just because the new guy is new, I hope he is getting a fair chance. I’ve never seen a real reason posted yet. I’ve been wanting to know for some time as my annual trips get close.

This all said, did the bait shot up by the Super 8, I think Ike’s re-open? Or is there somewhere close there new?

We all miss dean and the exceptional service that he provided!

I myself have not been there since dean has gone! But I’m hoping the new operator will try and help folks out on the fish catching info!

I know when it starts getting cold and It gets to my Pool 4 time of year ill launch there! I’m sure many others will come around when landings are froze over and the bite gets going!

Jim got off on the wrong foot with some, who then posted here. I will agree with what my FM said we had no issues the partial week that we spent there. He is trying to make the guests there happy.

I have been there three times since Dean left twice as a paying customer, and once to help a friend that stays there. The two times as a customer I felt there was zero customer service, he acted like her could honestly care if I spent money there or not, and couldn’t WAIT till I got my goodies left just plain old didn’t seem like her cared at all.

When I went down to help a friend I was followed all the way down to the camper I was going to. When I tried to greet him with a hello I got 50 questions WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHY, WHEN then was informed that people that are not paying to stay down there soon wont be able to go down and visit where the campers are would be all roped off.

For me that was all it took I use to go over there pretty often beings it was a 3 min drive from my front door. I would go there just for the hell of it knowing there was going to be some good stories, and laughs to boot. It just all came off in a very unfriendly, non professional way to me.

I launched there last Friday and Saturday, on our way back from a fishing trip in central MN. Met Jim, the new manager, who overall was helpful in trying to get us a one day license for one of our group, although he couldn’t get his DNR connection going. Also showed me some ramp improvements he was in the process of making. Although I got my feathers ruffled a bit right at the start, in fairness I must say that he tried to be accomodating both days, and was up and at ’em before sun-up the next morning, knowing we were going to be launching early. If I end up heading back to the river for an October or November trip, would plan on staying there if he has openings, or at least launching there if not.
Besides, look how long it took us all to train Steve and Dean….now we have to start all over.

I went to Evertts with my nine year old son in early September. We were going to fish for cats in the evening and pitch a little tent camp overnight on the river. Jim suggested some places we could camp and was friendly in the bait shop. On Sunday morning when we returned he asked how we did. (We didn’t catch anything but my son still had a great time.)

Being as Dean is one of the best walleye anglers on P4 (just look at how well he does in the local tournaments) it’s going to be hard for anyone to provide fishing insights like Dean can.

There is all kinds of talk about just how bad things are down there. Regardless, there’s also no reason to go there anymore. The ramp at the 63 bridge over the backchannel (WI side) is going to be maintained all winter. It’s free to launch there.

It’s a tough one. You reap what you sow, and when you sow bad seed, you don’t get a harvest. What goes around comes around and that old horse has been beat to death. You can get your jigs & plastics at Dean’s Tackle Box and there is always a ramp somewhere to slide your boat into the river. Time to let nature run its course.

On a positive note, the seasonal campers that are left are closer than ever before.

I apologize for the piling on; but this struck a chord with me. I used to go there to hang out too. I met Jesse there, I met Eric there, I met Stuart there and dozens of other guys who liked hanging in the bait shop. Dean twice hooked me up with guys going out to fish when I was just planning on doing a little shore fishing. And Dean treated me the same if I spent a buck on a beverage or $400 on a rod or nothing at all.

Here is something a lot of people haven’t thought of yet. Dean leveled the playing field when it came to the bite in the Fall,Winter and Spring months on Pool 4. He gave freely of his advice and kept the hot baits laying right on the counter. I would have had no problem going in and buying what was on the counter and going out fishing. There are many people who had great Pool 4 experiences because of Dean’s advice that would have not had near the success without his words of wisdom. That playing field is no long level my friends and if you are looking for Jim to point you in the right direction as far as bait selection goes—good luck with that. I spent years looking at what Dean suggested and talking to him and asking him why and I feel I am up for the challenge but for the guys that come up a time or two a year this is going to be a major blow to their fishing success. Dean was, is and always will be “the man” when it comes to customer service but that is not all he was. He was our inside source to fishing success and I am afraid it is going to make for a long year for a bunch of guys. For you guys that only make a trip or two a year to Pool 4 please feel free to PM me and I will tell you anything I have heard or experienced because I know how daunting a task it is to figure out the Pool 4 bite at times and Dean withdrawal is going to be hard on all of us
