Fishing was good on Saturday. The walleye bite on the other hand was a little slow. Looked like many people had the same idea as me and stayed in town and hit the river. Lots of fishing boat out yesterday and lots of IDOers. That with mild temps and a nice breeze made for a good day on the water.

Steve and I started out pitching jigs tipped with crawlers to wingdams. The action was good but it was mostly sheep head that where biting. Sticking this out we did manage a couple of nice walleyes and for big fish Steve picked up a very nice channel cat.

The rest of our fish where taken trolling. Found a few mid sized walleyes trolling rocky shorelines. Even had a little flurry of action trolling then main channel in 10 to 13′ of water for saugers.

Sure was a lot of IDOers out yesterday enjoying the water. Good to see many of you guys. Hope to see you again at the end of the month for the get together at Lion Levee.

Good to see you too Mike. Fred and I had some slow fishing as well. It was the first time I had fished with Fred and we spent time comparing notes on spots and methods. Thanks for getting me out Fred! Even with the lack of fish being caught it was nice to get out there and enjoy the feeling of fall in the air!

Here is Fred with a nice 21″ wingdam walleye.

I was down Friday, to get out ahead of all the week-end traffic. Beautiful day, but we too had to work for the walleyes. My go-to wingdams were only producing smallmouths. We did find a few cooperative walleyes pitching cranks and paddletails pretty tight to shore on a couple of different wingdams. The trolling runs only produced one of our smaller walleyes. Could not keep the sheephead off while trolling.

I started the day at first light, throwing topwater flies with my 6weight. It wasn’t as fast and furious as last weekend but I did catch about a dozen Smallmouth. What they lacked in size they made up for with enthusiasm!

I ran into Mike and we agreed that I could take my rig home and go back out with him. Like Mike said, the pitching bite was a little slow. It was REALLY slow if your name wasn’t Mike It was a fun afternoon and great to see so many IDO friends out there today.

Some of the smallies I caught on Friday would go airborne multiple times. Most were only around 12″ too. I bet that channel kitty was a blast on a jigging rod!

I was able to get out Friday night and Saturday morning. Friday night the bite was pretty good for numbers – both pitching and trolling. We would get 1 or two on every spot, and my buddy Karl lost one nicer fish but we never got to see it. We caught a lot of fish on small leeches on a draggin jig…and when we ran out of those we got on a pretty good trolling bite on sand.

Saturday morning was a little different. Like most noticed, the pitching bite was much tougher but I did manage to extract two nicer fish on some side channel rocks – 28.5 and 25. Since pitching was tough, I decided to go back to the sand and it was a good thing. We had a fun filled 2.5 hours of fish on almost every pass. The biggest in the area was 22 inches but we had two doubles and what made it so fun was these fish were striking the cranks violently. My partner for the day hadn’t been on P2 in over 20 yrs and he was all smiles. He was schooling me on the #7 red tiger flicker until I switched. These fish were in pods in 8-12′ and when the sun got high they soured on us so we packed up. The photo is the big fish on Saturday. She was still pretty thin but I have to think these fish will start putting on some weight pretty soon.

I was also out on Saturday evening, trolling. Ran into Mike and Rootski while on a trolliing run. We had a great afternoon of trolling. Lots of doubles and never went a pass without a fish, both against current and with current produced fish for us. I switched to a different crank on each pass and I caught a fish every pass. It was a fun afternoon, mostly walleyes compared to saugers and a 22″ was the biggest fish of the day. These cool temps sure do have the blood flowing for fall…

Sunday wasn’t bad either. I took my dad out this morning. It was my first P2 trip this year and third ever. First spot had a small bass come off boatside. 2nd spot my dad had a big fish on that we landed but it turned out to be a sheepie. Still, it put up a good fight and we were working out the kinks. Spot #3 and we finally found the walleyes. We caught a 23″ on a Bomber 6a and a 19″ on a JSR5. Spot #4 saw nothing and spot #5 put out another respectable walleye. Not bad for a couple of yahoos with a few hours on the river. Water temps were 71. All fish were caught on wingdams with cranks.

    Great Job, Guy’s.

Dad and I made it out yesterday for the first time in a while. We had a wide varity of fish … Walleye, Sheeps, LM Bass, SM Bass, Crappie, Pike, and Carp. No real big fish (cept for that carp ) but was tough to complain with the beautiful weather.

Jig and Crawler to the dams trolling took our fish.

Went trolling with Gary this morning. We got about 8 to 10 eyes. Gary got a nice chunky 26″. The bite slowed considerably towards noon.
