Pool 4 Wing Dams

We’ve had such high water for so long I thought I would toss this one out there in hopes of keeping my insurance rates down.

The 3rd wing dam (furthest down stream) in just below the water line and starting to attack lower ends. I heard two boats go thump yesterday. Not enough to throw the motor up in the air or stop the boat, but they are making noise.

As the water keeps dropping #3 will become exposed and #2 will be the hazard.

On another note for your night folks, the construction area by the Y has one little…very little white light on it. It’s only visible from one direction. The good thing is that most people don’t travel that close to shore there…but with a barge tied off to it, you might want to keep that area in mind.

    Good post Brian!

Word to the wise, travel the MIDDLE of the river! that dam has eaten many lower units.

I didn’t realize that wing dams were that aggressive Do you think some bear spray would keep it at bay?

If you look closely at the tree closest to the second and third wing dam, you’ll see the notches cut into the trees. One notch for fishing boats, two for tuna boats.

Thanks for info Brian! Pool 4 has been pretty mean to my clients the past couple years so it’s about time we start to fight back!

I’ll tell you a sad story regarding that “bottom wingie” in 2008 are club Walleyes Unlimited had an outing on P-4. I remember the spring well because having fished P-4 every spring for longer than I care to remember, the water was low and very clean that year. a good friend of mine ” Polish Joe” had a 19′ Lund with a 225 Merc Verado and was running up river from the “y” toward the tailwaters. well instead of asking myself or someone else about “hazards” he proceeded @30 plus m.p.h. up river and you can guess the rest of the story… needless to say the insurance company totaled out the boat. someone should place a large “milk jug” on the end of that puppy attached to an old “Buick”…

Right out of Prescott I sometimes fish on the wing dams there and 9 out of 10 x someone will run their boat between the red buoy and shore.. I try to yell at them, but usually all you hear back is a smash sound. Happened again just last Friday.

I thought the “nice” thing to do was to try to warn people about the wing dams by waving and yelling.

All that did was to have the unfortunate boater take his hand and attention off of what they were doing and hit the rocks.

We need a universal sign for…”you are about to hit the rocks!”

We’re begining to see the same down here on Poool 14. Water has been high so long people seem to have forgotten where the “normal” level hazards are. I saw a BIG tuna boat wedged deep into a sandbar on my last outing. Can’t say as I felt too badly for them, but Brian’s post is a good thing to keep in mind regardless of what pool you are fishing! Thanks BK!
