Was out on the creek today, just trying to de-winterize my boat. fished for about an hour. picked up 4 saugers, between 16 and 18 inches. all on ringworms with the white tails, after talking to others they all agreed that the bite for the day had been the same for them. mostly saugers and very few walleyes, I was fishing a sand flat, just in front of a wing dam. I will be hitting it hard on pools 5a and 6. I will try to keep you guys updated as I go. anyone else in the area, put your thoughts and successes on this site. It helps everyone on the creek to have more success.
I have learned a lot from this site and now I can start putting back in. Keep up the great work

Thanks for the update minigrub. We just don’t see much for info for that area from the walleye guys so we certainly applaud your willingness to share and communicate with the rest of us.

    Good fishing to you!

Hey Minigrub, What kind of rig do you run in? I fish that pool often. Was out tonight for the evening. Caught a couple legal Walleye and a decent Sauger. Fishing was slow all around from what I could see.It seems to be a day to day thing for now.

I run a green 1650 lund with a 50 merc. Was out tonight as well, was real slow going by the dam, so tried some flats farther towards winona, and did a little better, best lure for the night was a green super doo, with meat. drifting with the current, and a little more trolling motor too. hopefully the flow picks up a little and things will change. the water temp was about 42 degrees. Our total for the night was 6 saugers and one walleye, all to small for the pan. I will be out all weekend, stop by and say hi if your out again, I usally have my labodor with me,

Fished there yesterday. Couldn’t get out until about 9am and went to Dresback first. I have never seen that many boats there. The lot was full and they were parked on both sides of the road all the way up to the rest stop. Only second time fished pool 6. Will be hitting it some more. Put in on Wisc. side below dam. 3$ to launch and pretty fair ramp. Didn’t do too bad. Between two of us about 25-30 eyes and saugs. Most small, enough legal eyes for a meal. Ringworms in 16-18 ft. seemed to work best for us. Seemed we had to keep changing colors. Would like to learn this area a lot better as it is closest spot on river for me. Not asking for any secert spots but some general ideas down would be greatly appreciated. Hope to get out again tomorrow. Thanks for the report and good luck.

Minigrub I think I saw you the other night. I may get out tomorrow (Sat.) if the wind is not to bad. I will have my son with me. I’ll stop you if I see. I am in a 16′ Lowe with an Evinrude.

    Minigrub,

your thoughts on Pool 5A versus Pool 6. I am originally from Winona and keep a few boats at my Dad’s place in Winona, but we seem to do much better at Whitman versus the Winona Dam. I couldn’t make it this weekend but my son is down there and I will let you all know how he does.

Going forward keep us posted and I will do the same thing. Love 5A in May/June with a touch of high water because the sloughs become so productive.

Let me know, I will not be able to make it out today, my son has the flu, but keep us posted, about pool 6 and 5a, I will try and get up to whitman tommorrow and see how my luck runs, do you normally fish up by the dam or hit the flats a little ways below the dam. I have not been up there this year so we will see what happens, say hello if you spot me out there.

Hey Guys, glad to see a little discussion about 5A and 6! I have been fishing pool 5A mostly but only up that way twice this spring. Last weekend the bite was decent if you could stand 40+ wind on Saturday.

I fished Trempealeau today with my 7 year old and we did well enough to keep him occupied. I do have to admit that he outfished me in numbers and size but I love a day like that when it lights up his eyes and he can’t wait to get back out there

Lots of boats and fair action but I never did see a fish over 18″, mostly small walleyes and saugers with enough eaters to keep most folks interested. I am guessing the spawn is over or at least at the tail end with the water temps around 46 in most places. Similar reports from the other guys I talked to.

    Good luck to all.

Spent most of the day friday on pool 6. Water was a lot dirter than on wenesday. Caught some fish but wasn’t as consistent. Did some exploring and picked up a few fish off wing dams and a couple off edge of a sand flat.Chart. pepper ring worms worked best for me.Bite really died off after the sun broke through. Good luck.

Well, I was again on the mighty creek yesterday, closer to the whitman dam. picked up a couple of small ones by the dam, until it started to pour out, decided to head in, stopped by keiselhorst bay, and picked up one walleye about 19 inches, water temp there was 48 degrees where by the dam it was 43 degrees. I was using a chartuese superdoo. Has anyone noticed if the temp makes a difference on the bite, what temp do they really start to pick up the bite. Thanks for all the input on 5a and 6 pools. Keep it up

    EyesNDucks:

Are you sure the spawn is over or is it just beginning. I just read on the Pool 9-10 report that they thought the fish were just dispersing to spawn. I talked to a friend who fished the Rock last week and said the surface water temp was 48* and the two females they caught were hard as rocks. I also haven’t heard much about milters but then I could be wrong as I am only down there twice a spring from northern WI. Just wondering if the surface temps have risen because of the abnormal air temps lately and whether the subsurface water is cool enough to keep fish from spawning and are they just getting ready? Also would like think that the Rock and 9 & 10 are further south and should have warmer water than up north nearer to you. This is not intended to offend, just my thoughts.
