Pool 2 Saturday morning.

Been a few weeks since hitting pool 2. Water levels sure had dropped since my last trip down. Started out casting heavy H2O jigs tipped with crawlers to one of my favorite wing dams. The flow was moving those jigs threw pretty fast but did manage to hook up with one nice walleye off this tip.

The next couple of spots where little shoreline current breaks. Joel and I managed a number of mid sized fish on this spot. Think Joel caught most of them pitching jigs and white moxies. I managed a few nice smallies casting cranks with the biggest being just over 18″s. Pretty good sized for a pool 2 small mouth.

We finished up the morning long line trolling a few spots with crank baits. Didnt find any one spot holding a lot of fish. Just one here and one there. Trolled a mix of blue, brown or red cranks this morning with all catching fish.

The walleyes and saugers where a nice mix of sizes Saturday morning. Most falling in the upper teen size with maybe 4 or 5 over 20″s. Would guess we had around 15 walleyes and saugers for the morning with a mix of other fish. Thought that was pretty decent walleye fishing for this time of year on pool 2.

It was a good little outing. Thanks Mike. Mike caught a just about 26″ walleye that really looked bigger than that and appeared to already be supersizing for the winter months ahead. Surprisingly, hairjigs did not do much today and white moxies were hot. A few weeks ago it was just the opposite. You just never know.

Wouldn’t surprise me that the muddy water yesterday was what got the white moxie’s to go again. I noticed while trying to get the boat straight on the trailer that I couldnt even see the fenders just a few inches under water. Thats some mud. There was lots of grass in the water yesterday to.

Got out this weekend after 2 months of no Pool 2. Had a good day with a 17 Walleye/Sauger mix. All fish were between 15 – 19. Pithing jigs with Crawlers/Gulp. crawlers seem to do better.

Had a Big Beaver swim past the boat. Was 3 feet from the boat and seemed to not care I was there as it swam slowly upstream. That was cool to see.

I did make it out tonight from 430 to 830. Lots of tuna boats and cruisers making their way back to the city marinas. Started out trolling cranks and connected with one small fish. Pitched cranks to rocks and couldn’t connect. Switched to jigs and the big fish went on a tear for a couple hours, a 28, 27, and two 26’s.

Nice report Mike. Got out and fished Pool 2 Sunday AM from 7 to 12:30ish. Flow was down since last trip in mid-July, but not back to “normal” levels. Water was 81 degrees and visibility was 0 to 6 inches max. The bite seemed to be best from 10:30 to 12:30. Fished current seams and wing dams boating 14 walleyes. The biggest was 25″ with most being 14 to 19 inch and a few other 20+. All but one fish were caught trolling #7 flicker shads (boated one casting wing dams on the same bait). All fish were 9 feet or less and don’t be afraid to hand hold the rod and “jig” that crank as that seemed to be key to getting bites. Also a lot of short strikes or lost fish. The 494 ramp is very usable however still no dock. This was likely my last visit to Pool 2 for the summer unless a day off is needed to get the fix taken care of. Good luck to all venturing out.

Has anyone used the 494 landing this week? When I was down last week I noticed a sign that said road will be closeed starting 8/8. Just curious if it is back open???

I launched out of there yesterday evening. The road is a little tore up, but not closed. There were probably 20 trailers in the lot when I get there at 5. That’s the most I have seen since I started fishing in mid June. It’s amazing how many people are coming out of the woodwork with the lower water. Fishing wing dams and faster moving current in 4-8 fow worked well. Good luck!

    Jake,

Everything was in great shape on Saturday the 16th. Fishing was OK. Walleyes were a little tough, but the white bass were on fire! My 9 year old son had quite a time.
