A freind, his son and I got an early start today and landed on Lake Pepin. Our plan was to pull three ways with floating jigheads and leeches and crawlers. The leeches were a good idea. Jumbos.

The weather became an issue after an hour and a half of fishing but we did fair up to that point.

We launched our of Roschen park and headed downstream. Targeting water between 20 and 25 feet we didn’t have to wait long to put 4 fish in the well….2 saugers and a couple of walleyes. One walleye taken today taped out at 28 1/2 inches and drew the scale down to just past 8 pounds. Not a bad fish, but the fight from deep water, 76 degree water at that, didn’t do the fish any justice and it would not revive. We notice her floating shortly after the release and got her back to put in the well with the aerator running all the time and she just wouldn’t take. That basically is the only down side to the trip today.

A little after nine we noticed a line of dark clouds rolling in from the west and a peek on a phone’s aps showed a major storm barreling down on us so we boogied. I cannot believe the people hurrying to get OUT on the water as we were pulling out. They had to have gotten a dousing by now.

Everything today came on three ways with 3 foot leaders to Phelps Floaters and leeches. Crawlers got sheepies.

Not bad for a short trip, but I sure wish that hen would have recovered.

    Thanks Tom!

I have to figure out how to get out for some of them. I have some Sturdiwheat fish coating that needs to be used up!

    Ain’t that the truth.

Each fall I get some nice fish like this either in the Lake City docks fishing while I’m fishing Crappies or off pool 5 while I am jigging them. Either way, this is the first large Walleye I have killed in many, many years. On the docks I love watching other just about dirty themselves when the see me slip one like this back in the water and wave it good-bye. It had to be the warm water and the depth today that did the damage. Seen similar things up on Mille.

I’ve added the pic to the first post of the thread.

It stinks when one won’t swim away, but it does happen.

Sounds like a heck of a good day, as long as you were able to stay away from the weather

Speaking of which….you guys west of Roch must have gotten a deluge. The Cascade behind the house up and running hard right now. Even the river below Silver Lake Dam is humping right along. Can we saw NO WAKE on the Zumbro for a day or two?

Appreciate your sharing of the leeches/crawler results as well as the difficulties with the big one. It does happen. Thanks for the post.

Awesome job and report Tom. I wonder why some of the fish have awesome color like yours and others have poor color like the big girl I caught on Wed.

    Sorry for the poor pic.

I think some of that equation is genetics and some of it could be health related. I’ve heard tell that mineral content in water can influence a fish’s coloration, but that would be a moot issue in the “Sippi” I think.

The 20 incher we took today was well colored too. Very bright.
