Still can’t believe I saw those guys anchored under the rollers last week. Crazy.
I heard a fella as the lock operator if he could just motor through the open dam…the response was…
“If we catcha, you go to jail.”
Personally, going up stream, I don’t see a problem unless the boater has an under powered motor. Going down stream is a bit trickier.
But since it’s kinda stupid to try either way, I’m sticking with the friendly lock operators at Lock and Dam #3.
PS Doug, I know a fella the received a ticket in the mail because he was fishing inside the 150 foot line.
As of Sunday evening they were pulled back out of the water.
Nothing like a natural (at least natural for the last 70 years) free flowing fish ladder.
Say, quick question for you guys who are more familiar with that part of Pool 4…I’ve fished there early/late in the year. But is it still decent walleye fishing now and in July? Was gonna maybe take my son there this coming weekend. Been out on Pepin a few times and getting tired of catching nothing but 14-inch or smaller eyes. Heh.

The walleye fishing May – July is actually better in the upper river for numbers than it is in the winter/spring. You just won’t be up at the dam most of the time. The WI channel can be incredible as are current breaks on the main channel around the mouth to the WI channel and Hay Creek.
Dragging light jigs downstream tipped with livebait is tough to beat and there’s always a crankbait trolling bite to play with as well.
IF you’re not familiar with Draggin Jigs… here’s a video on the basics.
Cool. Thanks! Great tips, and I love that video link. Boy, would love to have a day like you guys did there. Looked like a blast. I see you were using leeches quite a bit. I’m partial to crawlers, but may have to try the leeches.
Like James said in the video, fish both–the fish will let you know what they want.
Hard to beat a blue dragging jig and a leech!

Hey? What forum is this?
One where you’re tolerated… but just barely.

Days like that are far from uncommon late June – mid July.

The fish always seem to have a day to day preference. Fishing one and forgetting the other is definitely not a good plan as they can be incredibly picky. At times they want larger leeches. Most of the time they want smaller. When the fish are on a crawler bite they want half a crawler yet some days they won’t hit anything but a full 10″ yard snake. Experiment… when you hit on the right combo the fish will tell you.

Experiment…
Exactly! Sometimes they want Secret 7…
and other times Sudden Impact. Experiment!
Thanks for putting up with me.
