I just thread the ringworm onto a light leadhead jig in the same way you’d rig a twistertail.
there’s a picture on top of Beav’s article on ringworms that looks different than a normal rigging of a twistertail. It looks like he has it barely hooked on the jig. is that how he rigs them?
Sorry, that’s a poor shot to begin that article with as it causes confusion over the proper rigging method. That pic is quite deceiving as the hook is laying above the head of the ringworm for display purposes only. The intent was to show the proportions of the hook size to the ringworm body. If Beav was to pick up that rod and cast, that particular ringworm wouldn’t be going anywhere…
No, I thread them on just like I would thread on any plastic. Stick it in the middle of the nose, slide it down the shank til it pops out….that’s it. Nothing fancy at all.
Beav
you ever rig them on Northland’s lipstick jigs? does the color of the jighead make any difference?
No, I’ve never used them on Lipstick jigs… beav may have. The last time out a couple days ago, color made a huge difference for both the ringworm AND the jighead. The fish wouldn’t hit black…. but a deep-dark purple would get hit regularly. Purple ringworms worked but electric blue ringies with a blue/purple flake got ignored. Fish are weird….
So the thing to do is CONSTANTLY be experimenting when the bite is slow. This last time out the back of Dustin’s boat looked like someone had taken a gallon bag of assorted plastics and just shook it upside down by a corner at the bottom until the ringworms went flying everywhere.
And then it snowed and froze them all to the floor!
I really like the Lipstick jigs. Guess the biggest reason is I had a couple of exceptional days on the ‘Croix with smallies on those jigs. maybe it was the leech that was attached to the jig??!! maybe the expert presentation??
they seem to have the wideness that Beav was talking about in his article
Speaking of attached . What happened to that photo that looked like a smallmouth was attached to your lip.LOL But since were talking ring worms is it ok to store them in a plastic boxs like Flambeau’s or do they all melt all
over so you can’t pull them out. I was just straightening some stuff out and put them in a couple of boxes and I got to remembering another unpleasent memory a long time ago with plastic worms in a regular tackel box. What a mess and no I wasn’t LOL on that one. Just curious. Thanks Steve
Let me give you some storrage tips right after I say…No, I haven’t used Lipstick jigs. I mainly use mushroom heads and when things get really snaggy I will use Charlie Brewer Spider Slider heads for a more snagless approach. I’ve even caught walleyes Texas rigging a ringworm with a #1 wide gap plastic worm hook. Jigs aren’t the most important part of the equation, just don’t use any jigs with hooks smaller than about a #1 jig hook.
For storrage, I used to use Plano boxes with little or no problem. Now my plastics box is a 20 gallon Rubbermaid tote. I buy all my worms and other plastics by the 100’s and then put about 20-25 each in zipper freezer bags, snack size. That is the best way that I’ve found for storing them.
Why buy by the 100’s? Because on a decent day when fish are going good on one color and your buddy doesn’t have any, it’s easy to go through 25 easily.
Ever notice when you buy 100 that there always seem to be a handful of worms that are permanently bent? Take those worms and throw them in a microwave safe bowl full of water and put ’em on high for about 5 minutes. Take ’em out and lay them straight on a paper towel or regular towel and let them cool. They’ll stay straight after that. I also spray a little Pam into bags of worms that seem to be losing their slimy texture.
So, put your worms, tubes, lizards, Super-Dos in snack size zipper freezer bags and then put them in a bigger container or a soft sided tackle bag, and they’ll be easy to store and use.

Beav,
Thanks for the great storage tips! I would’ve never thought to “relubricate” with Pam! I wasn’t sure if plastic freezer bags would or wouldn’t stick to the plastics either. Thanks for sharing!
yeah that info helps out alot, i hate keeping myne in the box the plastics end up sticking to thing sand when you toss them back in there drags crap in a while.
the Lipstick jigs have a mushroom type head. i don’t know why they wouldn’t work
leinieman,
the avatar you speak about wasn’t me. it was my buddy Lunker with a 5 lb plus smallie caught on a unnamed lake in Northern Wi. caught it on a white buzzbait.
nice little lake. our group caught 4 big smallies , 2 muskie and 4 nice walleye. goin’ back this year for sure.
I like to rig mine on a 1/8 to 1/4 ounce Gopher Tackle Mushroom head jig. Sometimes I will take a Berkley Power Minnow and “lip hook” it on the jig too. This gives me a “V” type shape with the ringworm tail and the power minnow.

What color does everyone perfer??? what color has produced the best for you??
thanks

A note about jigheads – Cabela’s has 1/16 oz. jigheads with 1/0 hooks. I’ve never liked 1/16 oz. jigs because of the small hook, especially fishing plastics, so was glad to find somebody finally offered a solution.
Have Eric put up a link to Gopher Tackle. They make mushroom head jigs with the right size hook for fishing ringworms. A wide variety of hook styles I might add.
I don’t have a favorite color……I have them all. If I was stuck with one color for the rest of my life, it would be Chameleon.
Beav
I like black with a chartruese tail or pumpkinseed…..both 4in Berkley Powerbait ringworms.
You can look at Gopher’s mushroom heads at http://www.gophertackle.com
Good Luck

Pumpklin seed is my favorite color also. I have always used pumpkin seed twisters for walleyes before but now that they have that color in ringworms, as jed clampet would say, HOT DIGGITY DAWG
Purple-purple-purple, and i hook mine up so that the tail is pointing down. And one more thing I hold my tongue out like this.. hey beav…….who is Pam ?
ec
Beav, 2 questions. How do you rig your superdos on a jig, and will you be at BSP before the meeting starts tomorrow?
I thread on a Super-Do just as I would any other solid bodied plastic. Start at the nose and thread it on the hook trying to keep it in the center of the body as much as possible. Bring the hook out so the tails lay flat and the body runs straight down the shank of the hook. Nothing fancy, just try to keep it straight.
Yes, I’ll be there before the meeting…….probably pushing a shopping cart.
