Launched at Evert’s around 8:00 this morning. Our plan was to pitch for awhile and then go check out the sauger bite up by the dam. Pitchin’ produced a couple of short walleyes, a few white bass and sheepshead that had us going for a little while thinking we had a nice walleye. 1/4 and 5/16 oz. jigs were plenty big for the area we were pitchin’ with Moxies.
Just before 10:00 we headed up by the dam and checked that out. We had lots of short fish, mainly south of the culvert. Took a quick break and went down to see Dean. Dean gave us a couple of pointers (Thanks Dean!) and we headed back out. Ended up getting four eaters to take home.
We were Dubuque riggin’ with 5/8 oz. jigs and paddle tails on the bottom and a plain hook with minnow on the upper line. The bite was definitely off today with many missed fish (they would just hang on the minnows) and several that came unbuttoned in the net or just before
It is always good to get out on the water and today I was able to fish with my brother and nephew. It was my nephews first time on the river and I am pretty sure he wants to go back. The weather could have been a little nicer but it sure beat workin!
