Walleye trolling line question

    Hello,
I haven’t done much trolling in the past but I’m starting to get set up to do it more. I wanted to run 14lb Suffix mono and a 10lb fluorocarbon leader. The 14lb suffix is the same diameter as the Berkley xt 10lb. I realize the precision trolling data is primarily based off of 10lb xt. Being as the line I want to run is the Samer diameter will my dive curves be close enough to the xt to get by?

Do not overthink it. I run 12 lb on my trolling rods and never mess with a floro leader, i can’t imagine a situation that would be necessary. I know how deep my baits run by the type and make and have never used the precision trolling data. Keep it simple and you will do it more. Good luck and have fun.

If your running mono you probably won’t need a fluorocarbon leader. Sunline has a 16lbs mono that a lot of people are using. Same diameter as 10lbs XT. Dive curves should be close if you use the same diameter line.

Thanks for the reply guys. I thought I would be ok using the same diameter line. My the general habit is to use a lead that is slightly lighter test than my main line. I like using a swivel and a bead to limit line twist and the bead will catch weeds. Most of the lakes around me are on the snaggy side. I use the lead more as a safety than visual thing. My thought was that the 10lb lead would break and I would only lose the crank and don’t have to try and retrieve the board and everything.

If they are snaggy switch to braid and use a fluoro leader. You can really see how your baits moving with braid.

Which lakes / water clarity are you planning on fishing? Depending on water clarity running fluoro and how many feet of it may make a difference.

If line diameter similar the dive curve should be similar.

I ran 10 pound leader fluoro last year. I had a few break offs. I switched to 12 pound leader fluoro and I had fewer break offs. I plan on running 12 pound Seaguar Blue Label Fluorocarbon Leader Material again this year.

I mainly fish lakes around Waterville and Mankato. So water clarity is not really an issue. I will make the occasional trip to Mille Lacs so then I have the clarity issue. Maybe I will play with running straight 14lb mono vs a leader.
