Walleye structure

Hey Guys! I’ve been ice fishing somewhat hard for the past 4 years and have been somewhat successful but I just cannot catch the walleyes like I do in the summer. What kind of structure am I missing from summer to ice? I’ve heard guys say on the lake I fish to set up as if you’re crappie fishing and you’ll find plenty of walleyes. Any truth to that? If so, where do I start looking for that structure? I’ve never targeted crappies.

In my experience it’s not possible to catch the number of walleye one can catch in the summer. Sure you might have that great day here or there but in general you will catch a fraction of what you can catch in the summer.

Your ability to find fish in the winter is just reduced so much, plus walleye just don’t eat as much in the winter. In the summer I can check 20 spots in an evening until I find them. In the winter you can check a few spots at best.

There’s a reason people flock to the winter fishing destinations like, Mille lacs, Lake of the Woods, and Red. Your odds of winter walleye success are better when there are more fish, plain and simple.

Joe explained the logistics battle very well.

Crappies typically use more basin area’s. You can catch them together, but walleyes will typically be closer to the break edge, on either the top or bottom. James and the guys explain that very well in their last mille lacs video. A tip up or the ifish pro setup can help by keeping an eye on the top or bottom of the break while fishing the other.
