Plan on trying to get into walleye fishing slowly and wondering where to start. Only experience was a trip to lotw vertical jigging and had a blast. Live here on the Mississippi River though and have some success vertical jigging but was curious about pulling cranks and crawler harnesses on the Mississippi. I realize there is a great archive here but stumped as to methods still. Lead core for crank baits and bottom bouncers for crawler harnesses? When would I use lead core over bottom bouncers and vice versa? Plan on buying 2 cheaper trolling combos from cabelas or somewhere to get started.

Where on the Mississippi? Here in the metro area?

Trolling and pitching cranks are a staple. I’ve never used leadcore on P2….the areas are usually shallow enough to just long line. I don’t usually run a bottom bouncers but it’s a viable option in the same areas you would troll.

I have 4 go to presentations that I use all year.

    1) casting cranks
    2) jigging live bait
    3) trolling cranks
    4) pitching plastics

The “how” varies tremendously on these tactics based on time of year. But I always have rods ready for these applications at all times.

Read through the P2 and and walleye threads as there is info on tactics.

This approach covers me for all of pool 2. I would say that don’t focus as much on the tactics. Learn the spots and conditions that hold fish. That’s a whole different thread though!

Ya sorry should have specified. Pool 10. Have jig fished around the dam at lynxville but haven’t done anything beyond that.

I generally fish pools 7-9, use most methods you mention at one time or another , but 80% of my fishing here is pitching jigs and plastics, or pitch crawlers on the wing dams and other rock structure . Caught a 29” last sunday on a crawler . Keep it simple . Right now all methods seem to be working , so no need to invest alot of money on gear
