Walleye leader and pike

    Hi gang.

Wondering what you guys are running for a leader for walleye when you got some big toothy critters around. The lake I fish is known for big pike 25+lbs. I normally just run my 5-8lb fluoro leader to a a quick change snap but don’t really want to loose some pricy life’s to a pike.

I was thinking of just bumping up my fluoro leader to 20+ fluoro but not sure if that is best move or not.

    Cheers.

Get some 10-20# REAL leader material, like Blue Label.

Fluorocarbon “line” doesn’t have anywhere near the abrasion resistance as fluorocarbon “leader”.

I run 20# floro almosty evereywhere I fish unless the fellow fishermen in the boat are kicking my butt, then I’ll downsize to 10# floro…

Won several of the pike pools by doing so!!!

If I had a lake that regularly put out pike 25#+ I wouldn’t be fishing for walleyes lol

I’d go 20# test at least. I’d sacrifice line shy eyes rather than big beautiful pike full of lost walleyes lures.

I should have specified that all my fluoro leaders are leader material. No strait fluoro line.

Seaguar works pretty good. I was having some issues with pike biting off my bass lures so I started using 20 pound Seaguar as leader material. It has proven to be effective without sacrificing action on some bass lures.

I hear yea Mr. Beads. I spent the last 10 years pulling giant pike out of that lake. Want to switch it up this year and try my hand at eyes. The lake is catch and release for both walleye and pike so both can get huge.

I will give 20lb Seager a try and see how that works this year.

    Thanks for advice lads.

Until recently I did not realize there was any difference between Fluro line designed for mainline use and Fluro line intended as leader material. I had always just use the mainline Fluro for my leader material on my braid line setups. After learning this I have recently purchased some Seaguar STS Trout / Steelhead as my leader material. They make the STS Trout / Steelhead in 4-17lb. test and the STS Salmon in 20-50 lb. test. I’ve been using the 10lb. for my setups for Jigworms and other finesse applications and when using Jerkbaits for bass and walleyes. I’ve been using the 17lb. for spinnerbaits, Buzzbaits, and Jig and pig fishing. So far I have to say I really like it. I have not been bit off yet since I’ve started using it. With the 10lb. mainline fluro I use to get cut off fairly often. So far so good. looking forward to putting it more to test next summer when the Finesse bite really kicks in and I normally get bit off often.

Adam – Like other here – I like to know where you live that 25+lb. is common or a lake that its know for. South of the Canadian Border there are rather few 25+ lb. pike caught. I’d say for those situation that a 20lb. fluro leader would be the least I would be fishing.

B-Man – I was curious as to why this would be and found this test. Not so sure there is a difference.

I might try out a similar test in the video as I have same brand fluoro main line and leader material. I was always under the assumption it is more abrasion resistant but would like to find out for myself.

I probably shouldn’t say regularly 25+lb pike, I usually catch 2-5 a year that reach that mark out of this lake. Also targeting these big fish and not catching many small pike.

2-5 a year out of a lake would make it a rare prime location. Be sure to send us some pictures of those beauties. I love pictures of BIG pike.

If you do some testing on the Furo leader material be sure to share your results. It would be interesting to see. It may be a little tough to test abrasion resistantness well. I would think it would be tough to create the same abrasion across multiple lines

Believe me, there is a difference in the real world (with fish teeth, which are more like knives than sandpaper).

I challenge you and a buddy to go fish a hammer-handle lake. One guy use line, the other guy use leader. There’ll be a clear winner, I promise toast

I run 15-20# leader material on my tip-ups and rattle reels too. I used to run fluorocarbon line as a leader, and learned the hard way lol
