I’m looking for a new walleye ice fishing rod and I’m asking for some suggestions on what kind of action (medium light/medium) and best brand would be worth the money.

I’m also wondering on a rod case to hold a couple of rods as well. Thanks guys!

We’d love for you to check us out at Tuned Up Custom Rods. And from our line-up, I’d recommend the Power Precision for the power of rod you’re asking for.

I have several of the limit creek rods and they are a lot of bang for the buck. Love those things!

I have been using the TUCR Precision and its worked well. Ordered a Power Precision for just walleye. Looking forward to getting it in a few weeks.

I have the Eskimo rod bag. Holds 4 with storage for tackle as well.

I have a Precision TUCR, a JT Gold Digger and more recently added a Thorne Bros Perch Sweetheart. I like all of them the JT probably has more back bone than the others. I really like the TB rod and would probably suggest it above the others unless your fishing somewhere that you will hook into a lot of big ones.

Rod storage depends on how much room you have. I use an older otter box, but its big.

To the OP, after many years I think I may have dialed in my ice rod and case array for my style(s) of fishing, and would say that any additional insight you can share will help. For the rod, will this be a jigging rod, deadstick, both? Do you fish in a shelter of some sort, hole hop outside? As for the case, it was mentioned about how much room you have, how many rods do you want to carry, walk out or drive, inside or outside, what type of shelter…etc.

I fish mainly walleye and perch, sometimes pike, crappies and gills, jigging and deadsticking. Rods are 30 JT Panhandler w/spring bobber, 32 TUCR QT, 32 TUCR Precision, 34 JT Golddigger, 36 TUCR Deadstick, JT Shiver stick (45 inch, outside and truck fish), Frostbite Drench (39 inch, outside and truck fishing), and as custom made Yogi 32 Carbon walleye rod.

The two cases I use are the Otter 48 Pro Tech Deep Rod Case and the 2B XL Rod & Gear Bag. If I’m taking everything while driving out and have room, I take the Otter. If space or weight is an issue I pick the 4 rods I will use and take the 2B rod bag. I have found this to provide the most security and safety for the rods while in transport, storage and use on the ice.

Probably more than you wanted but it’s kind of a loaded question :). If I were to make any changes it would be to get a Frostbite Smokeshow if the Drench goes away, and after reading this if something happens to the Tucr QT that Thorne Bros Perch Sweetheart may find it;s way to my home :).

One final piece of advice for consideration that has driven me to the brands I have discussed is Customer Service. JT and TUCR and Frostbite have been responsive, generous, and reliable in my experiences; with each of them going above and beyond. St. Croix has been that way with open water rods but I haven’t tried their ice rods. The only one I’ve had numerous negative experiences with and hence do not use their open water rods or ice rods is 2B/Elliott.

I have a JT Shiver Stick and also a Tuned Up Power Precision. You can’t go wrong with either of those two rods.

I have i think 5 or 6 walleye rods from big crappie and a handful of panfish rods as well. We put them to the test and they are great
I also have a couple from tuma he makes nice rods as well. I’ve bought 2 or 3 from other guys on here as well.

OK, so I have the JT Gold Digger (30″), JT Shiver Stick (32″), DH Customs Perch Pounder (32″), TUCR Quick Tip (32″), TUCR Commander (32″), TUCR Fusion (32″)

If Im strictly targeting walleyes I generally reach for the JT Gold Digger for baits 1/8oz up to 1/4oz and if its a light bite and Im using 1/8oz or smaller, I grab the TUCR Fusion

Th Gold Digger is a Med/Light but leans more toward Medium and the Fusion leans more toward a light rod (which also works well for perch and crappies)

Honestly, most of the rods I listed will work for most walleye situations

As far as a rod case, I would recommend any kind of hard sided case you can get. I have the older Otter case which is no longer made and it holds rods up to 38in I believe

The lakes and rivers hard case is reasonably priced and holds 4 combos perfect. I can have up to 32 inch rods in it.
If I’m in my truck then I’ll have my scheels 2.0 case that will hold 8 or 10 set ups and tackle and line and all sorts of junk i don’t need in it.

I have a TUCR Fusion that has gone to Devils Lake with me the last ten years in a row. Handles the jumbo perch as well as the walleyes. My son brought in a 27″ eye on his Fusion. The walleyes are really fun on this rod. Also have a Precision that is more of a Red Lake, LOTW rod. Not only are these top shelf rods I can attest the customer service you get from TUCR will not be outdone by anyone in the industry.

I build the vast majority of rods I use myself. I’m very picky on matching the rod to my presentation and not having an over-kill. Medium light is a good middle ground to start. I use slender spoons to 3/4oz spoons and a lot of other baits in-between.

All the brands above produce quality rods and stand behind their products. So first, I would think out your most common presentation and average walleye size and get a starting point with that. Most good “perch” rods are great walleye rods with lighter slender spoons & smaller jig raps. I use quite a few 1/2oz baits and they load the “perch” rods a little more than I desire. Then if Erie freezes, I have my set ups specific for that.

Don’t be afraid to slap a size 15 or smaller reel on a rod and dangle a spoon with it to see how it feels. Nothing like having the perfect rod feel like a wet noodle when you actually go to use it.

So many options now for rod lockers/cases/bags. My padded gun cases work perfect for me so I havent changed

have used (tried) dozens of rods in 50 years of ice fishing. the absolute best i have found is MAGS CUSTOM RODS. they are all handmade exactly as you order them. impeccable quality. my walleye rod is medium in 28″. i also have 2 deep water rods for lake trout fishing in lake superior. exceptional quality and service.

Just pulled the trigger on a MAGS rod. I was debating the TUCR fusion or a MAGS and the price made the decision for me.

You won’t be disappointed. Pat’s rods are among the best out there.

I have no problem using an Ugly Stick for the job, but personally prefer my Thorne Bros. Custom rods. It just sort of depends on the actual lure I’m using or the rig on it.
