How old do walleye get in the river? A while ago I was told that a 28 inch walleye is 20 years old or more. I think maybe he had things mixed up with a northern Canadian shield lake.

20 years old seems a little old for a walleye in the conditions you suggest. Depending on forage availability, probably more like 7 to 10 years old.

In the Wisconsin River system walleye reach 28″ in 9-11 years. I imagine the Mississippi is on about the same scale.

i would look up nick schlessers annual pool 4 survey he is ther large lake biologist out of lake city and every year puts a spreadsheet together with all the info from there netting and electrofishing and presents it to our walleye club in rochester. i know that it has been put on here for all to see and maybe bk or someone can post a link….very imformational stuff but i believe in pool 4 if it hits 12 yrs old it is odd he always told us pool 4 fish are like rockstars they live hard short lifes lol.

somewhere back a while ago I think it was BK who posted a link to a PowerPoint that compared pepin walleyes versus I think rainy lake. If I recall i think they struggled to find any samples of one from pepin that was more than 11 years old.

Need to think about the chart shown in this link. The data is from fish gathered in nets. Look at the fish being caught by anglers. Every year we see pictures of fish in the 29-30 inch range being caught by anglers. Seriously large walleyes. Nets tell 1/2 a story.

Keep in mind that chart shows an average size (likely the mean of all walleye’s caught), so they surely have many fish over 29-30″, but it is skewed to a 24-25″ average due to males or underdeveloped females.

I saw a survey from LOTW a while back that showed a 28″ walleye was 20 years old.

I talked to an individual with the DNR that stated a central MN walleye would be around 15 years old at 28″ based off of the data he has seen.
