I have been out to Waconia a hand full of times this year and haven’t had much luck finding the walleyes. I have fished sun up to sun down but never in the dark and I am wondering if I am missing the peak fishing times for this lake. Has anyone had any luck fishing walleyes on this lake during the dark hours?

Waconia is my home lake and I fished it quite a bit this year. But I don’t spend a ton of time going after walleye.

The only walleye success I’ve had is trolling crank baits along weed edges in 12-18′ of water. Of those we caught I think most were on shad rap #7 and if I remember correctly red crawdad was the hot color.

We caught a lot of bass and crappie trolling cranks along with a few walleye, pike and musky.

I’m determined to spend more time in the deeper water next year and getting some cranks down to 22-25′. I’ve marked fish there but haven’t spent enough time pursuing them.

The fishing report always says minnows off the reefs or east side of the island. I’ve tried both and haven’t gotten so much as a bite.

Lots of walleye in the weeds, doesn’t always seem to matter time of day, low light is good, but high noon works too. Just keep moving.

Dustin, what presentations are using to fish in the weeds? I really struggle in the weeds.

Jig and minnow, jig and plastic. Find the pockets and inside outside corners.

Any recent reports from Waconia? Thinking of heading out one night this week to troll crank baits or possibly live rigs. Any range of depth or type of structure to key on? This will be my first time on the lake.

Still known to be a short-window night bite?

How will traffic be on a nice weeknight this time of year?

I haven’t been out there this summer, but fish it a lot in the winter and previous summers. My advice would be to fish crappie. Walleye can be had but few and far between and I think 6 fish is my best night out there for walleye. Crappie on the other hand are plentiful, you have to pick thru some smaller ones, but pretty easy to put together a nice mess of fish. Fish off the edge of any of the reefs/weeds in the evening. It’s pretty weedy, so trolling cranks might be difficult.
