Vintage rod maintenance

  • #2016756

My father-in-law recently acquired two vintage lew’s speed stick casting rods. one of the rods comes out of the handle when force is applied to it. We’re not sure if it is a feature of the rod or not since we are both used to two-piece fishing rods needing similar force to separate the two halves. If this is not a feature what type of glue or another method should I use to fix the rod in place of the handle? My second question is, with this rod am I able to use a baitcasting reel, or do I need to use a spincaster?

I believe Lew’s was founded in 2009 so I don’t think I would call them vintage. The rod should not come out of the handle (if it were a telescoping rod it would slide into the handle). You can buy special glue that is made to attach the handle or just use a two-part epoxy. Since I don’t think you will be building many rods the two-part epoxy would be the cheaper way to go. If the reel seat has a trigger it would take a baitcasting reel or spincast reel. If it doesn’t have a trigger it would normally take spinning reel.
