Kickers are a dime a dozen, but with almost $3M/yr tied up in Bailey they are stuck with him. With all the special teams debacles this year, and consistent back kicker performance, I think the special teams coach/s need to be replaced.

As for QB, you will not see Wentz here in MN, unless they take Cousins and his crappy contract in return, can’t pay both those salaries. And as far as the developing a QB statement, name me 5 good QB’s that were developed? It doesn’t happen, you either have the talent or you do not. And apparently that measuring stick is hard to read because lots of teams swing and miss on QB’s, and some get lucky. Every team in the league missed on Brady several rounds before he was drafted by NE, and even they didn’t know what they drafted.

I do say, follow the NE strategy and draft a QB every year regardless of who you have playing, take a chance every year in the 4-6 rounds on a QB, see how they pan out.

Spiellman has done good and bad in his time, but the money spent on Cousins was a huge mistake, paying huge for mediocre talent. And for some reason they just cannot hit on OL or game changing Def. WR’s are like gold though.

The old strategy that was the norm for highly drafted QBs was to have them be the backup for a period of time under a veteran. They basically stood on the sidelines with a headset and a clipboard taking notes for at least a whole season. Heck, Aaron Rodgers did it for three seasons under Brett Favre. Mahomes was an understudy behind Alex Smith. I think they turn out a lot better when they aren’t tossed right into the fire as a rookie with all that pressure but very few fan bases, coaches, and GMs have the patience for that nowadays.

So who’s affected the most by Wentz being benched? The Eagles and the time/money invested? Wentz for possibly never having a sure starting role again?

Getting into wild theories here, but I wonder if it’s Trey Lance? I could very well be wrong. However, there are a lot of things lining up for bad news for him. He had what, one really solid year, then played one game this year? Which isn’t out of the question, quality scouts will be able to judge raw talents, evaluate film, and examine physical measurables. However, then you take the limited playing time from a lesser level of play….and combine it with the knowledge that the last time a team went after a QB in that situation, from that school, it turned out to be Wentz…..just food for thought. It may turn out to be nothing, but if I’m Trey Lance I’m watching TV thinking that being compared to Wentz is currently not a good thing.

Quarterback development is really dependent on the situation they are thrown into. Sure, you have to have the arm and mind, but there are more variables than just that. There are of situational elements of luck involved with both health and franchise positioning when young QBs are drafted.

Ben Roethlisberger and Russell Wilson come to mind as guys who were handed the keys to teams that had great defenses, coaches, and staffs in place. For every guy that is “talented” and plays right away with success, there are 3 guys who were equally as “talented” and played right away without success.

Carson Wentz?? Have you seen him play over the last two seasons??? He would be a downgrade from Cousins. Not to mention still a big contract.

Is there a way to merge these two threads?

    Bailey needs to go!

At least the rest of the team played well.

Dan Bailey isn’t guaranteed to be cut as he likely would be in other years for a few reasons. First, his contract would bring dead cap money for a team that’s already in a tough spot for salary cap. Also, with Covid restrictions most teams are carrying a kicker on their practice squad to avoid being stuck a week without a kicker. This makes the free agent options extremely sparse. It sounds like the Vikings don’t have a ton of faith in their current practice squad guy who had a questionable end to his college career and audition with the Bengals. They have brought in Taylor Bertolet who played in that short-lived AAF league for a workout.

This is why Zimmer makes the big bucks. Do you appease the fanbase by cutting Bailey, losing money, and going with the unknown options while there’s still a shot at the last wildcard spot? Do you work through Bailey’s confidence issues and stick with a guy who has historically been a good NFL kicker?

Zimmer has a long history of having no patience with kickers, so in any other year Bailey would already be gone, but as you pointed out this year is different and I don’t see them cutting him. Also, don’t really think they have a shot a WC spot unless they win out, and even then will need some help from AZ.

Another week another p/ss poor game. Terrible play calling and extremely poor defense. Season over.

Fire Zimmer and start drafting QBs

Zimmer was just given a contract extension this past off season. So firing him creates a large monetary problem.

Draft a QB. Who did you have in mind? Ponder 2.0?

Vikings were given over $500 million dollars. Money is never a viable excuse for them.

Cousins can play until they find someone. They need to start looking for and grooming a QB behind Cousins so we actually have a future

With the way the kitties played today against Tampa, they may not be able to field even a remotely competitive team against the Vikings next week.

The Vikes should treat the final game of this season like the final pre-season game. Give all starters the day off and see what the back-ups can do. No sense in possibly opening a starter up to serious injury.

I’ve been thinking the same thing. Only put players on the field who need evaluation. If you know they’re a starter next year or you know they’re not coming back don’t bother. It might be rough but get some of the younger guys more playing time to see what you have. Unfortunately we don’t have a backup QB with any future to do that with, and many of the younger/newer guys have already been playing.

The Offensive Line is a big part of the problem.

I don’t think its a “big” part of the issue here. The offense has been humming along nicely for weeks. 27 points against the Bears and 33 against the Saints should be more than enough to win both of those games. I do think it can be improved but the glaring issue is the defense, especially the run defense. Not having Michael Pierce, Hunters, Barr, or Kendricks in there for a significant portion of the season likely played a role in this issue.
