I am looking for some insight on video cameras,at the moment I am looking at gopro hero 3 or 4.
the price doesnt scare me away, but if I can save a few bucks and put that money somewhere else,I am good with that as long as the quality is as good or better.

I am familiar with the gopro series as that is what the tandem masters have used at our drop zone the last several years and have not seen any problems with them, skydiving is not an easy life for video cameras and they have held up very well.

my main use will be on my plane taking videos of my flights here and there, and quite a few fishing excursions with my grandson.
what do you use,and why did you choose it?

    thanks everyone!!

really?? no one videos anything anymore??
wasnt thinking of posting any videos of boring flights or stupid grandson of three years old catching his first fish or anything similar.
was hoping that someone with modern camera experience would post a reply of some sort.

There has been some good discussions on this but my quick Google searching can’t find those threads. Wish I could be further help.

I’m of no help either. I use my phone for video or my Nicon dslr. doah One of these days I’m going to drop my phone in the water while trying to film my buddies landing a fish.

The ones here that I see putting on video use Heros. I don’t know anything about them other than they have one clamped to the net, one to the wind shield.

I wish I knew everything about them to help you out but,I don’t know enough of anything to be of any help in your quest. sad

GoPro is the way to go. It is just so much more advanced than many of the POV cameras. I’ve used a ton of different cameras, and for what it looks like you will be using the camera for, the GoPro would be the right choice. You don’t probably need the latest and greatest. The prices of the “last year’s” models are a lot better. You could probably pick up a hero 3+ for about 250ish vs. 400+ for the 4.

Hero 4 session. $200. On-off button. That’s it. I downloaded the app to my iPhone. Mounted camera on bill of hat. You can see where you have it aimed on your phone. Can turn it on or off with phone or button on camera. Play it back and watch on your phone. No wifi needed. Use mine to film pike fishing. Watch what I recorded while still out fishing. Real easy. I haven’t done any editing yet Battery on camera lasts 45-50 minutes. 28gig micro sd card will hold close to 5 hrs recording
So easy even I figured it out….

The hero session does not have replaceable batteries so it needs to be plugged in anytime you want to film more than an hour…. I went with the HERO 4 SILVER. The silver has a built in LCD display that is touchscreen like a phone which makes changing settings a breeze. I would go with the Hero 4 Silver again without a doubt.

Dicks had a sale a while ago, $100 off all go pro cameras. I picked up the hero 4 silver for $299.

I used to sell GoPros at my last job, and after seeing how they all work I went with the Hero 4 silver. I love having the lcd display on the back as it makes changing settings very easy and you can see what you’re filming. The session is a neat little camera, but like stated above you can not change out batteries and it is only 8 megapixel and the silver is 12. I would definitely recommend the silver! PM me if you have any questions as I could go more in depth on why I like the silver the most.

I have the Silver 3+. You can use the phone and app to frame shots and change settings, but it will drain your phone and camera if you leave it on. So I just use it for those tasks. The LCD screen would be a welcome addition, but I haven’t gotten that yet. I prefer shooting the narrowest FOV possible.

That looks like a “He double L” of a ride for $200., I think I’d have to add that to the Silver if I was buying one!

Consensus looks to be GoPro. I have a 3 and it eats the battery fast for me. Now battery’s I searched and seen a few different brands on Amazon. Which ones hold up good and how many would you recomend getting. I do realize you can charge in the boat also. So 2,3,4, or more?

What is a good universal location in the boat to place the camera?

there are a lot of options for mounting of these cameras,in the boat I was thinking of using the headband for it.
like the idea of the hero 4 being water proof,or did I read that wrong?

my biggest fear was losing it from the plane when in flight, but will have to safety wire the mounting and camera to the strut as I plan on doing outside of the plane vids with it.

the camera, mounting options and other just have to have goodies can put the price north of 700 bucks pretty quick.
    where does it end???
just hope next year they dont come down two hundred and obsolete overnight which is my luck with stuff like this,I realize thats with anything these days.

thanks for everyones thoughts, looks like go pro is what it will be.

less than $500 easy for a hero 4 silver and many options. AMAZON.com The mounts and options are cheap. I believe the DBK batteries are best overall, check youtube for battery tests on the specific gopro you want and you will find out which is best!
