VHF Radio repair

It appears my VHF radio doesn’t feel like communicating anymore. I attempted to respond to a radio check while on Lake Michigan Saturday and there was a sudden loud burst of static and the radio shut down. A quick fuse and connection check with every looking good, I powered it back up. It appears I can still listen but the second I key the mic everything shuts down. I am not sure it’s worth fixing but, does anyone know of a place that has the ability to check it out and possibly repair it reasonably?
I have a spare mic that I have tried with the same result, so I am fairly certain it is more complicated than that.

Which model of radio and how old?

I don’t know of any local places here in the cities. Doesn’t mean there aren’t any, but the places that specialize in marine radios tend to be on the coasts.

It would have to be a high-end model and less than 5 years old to justify repair IMO. Most places you are looking at $100 minimum once you include postage back/forth and the diagnostics fee.

Standard Horizon Marine radios have a 4 year warranty. Pay shipping one way.

Mine was actually over 4 years old when I realized it broke while under warranty and they STILL fixed it. I’m a S/H fan as you can tell.

On a side note Ben at Jolly Ann Marine has a number of radios with full features under $150.00

PS Your radio is toast. Repairing it locally will cost more then a new one.
