Just an idiot question – what major advances have taken place with Vex since the Sitex days? I have a few FL-8’s and never looked any any newer vexilars.
I like my 28 a lot, and have never felt the need to look newer.
Between those 3 at full retail I’d get the 38. If I found a deal on the others, or bought second hand (like I probably would) I would easily be persuaded into any of them.

Zoom and a little clearer display is about it I think.

Yeah not much really. Brighter display, zoom, some colors, and most important to me is interference rejection. Oh and cost
Flx30 if you can find it at $399 new still. Those blowout sales look to be done though.
Brand new full retail? 28 or 38. Or wait for Marcum to come out with some big improvements in the next year or so with their new employees, but that wasn’t your question lol.
you can find it at $399
and I thought people were out of their minds for flasher price when they jumped for $60. to $119.
I have all 3 and the FLX-28 catches as many fish as the others. If it were me I would buy the one I can get a deal on. Like new Flx-28 sell for $400 on FB market place. Would not spend $700 for a new Flx-38 again. There was deals on the Flx-30 if you can find them still.
I am still loving my FL-20 from like 7 years ago. Works great. Do they still make the flat face ones?
I remember the FL-8s being $300 25+ years ago
LMAO yes, I’m that old…..

Not a vex guy but I thought they were all flat face models now. Perhaps if they still sell the fl8 that wouldnt be but the rest I thought were.
Great question Gavin. If my Marcum LX-5 were to die tomorrow Im not sure what I would replace it with. My old Zercom is retired but outside of noise rejection it will still show bottom, my bait and fish which is all I use them for.

My FL18 is just the 8 with zoom and or bottom lock, so same face. That being said I love my new 28 super crisp display. Will most likely be the last flasher I buy in my life though as I can’t really see what they can improve on from here.
Very happy with both my flx 30s, fl18, and recently sold my flx12.
I found an FL20 on Craigslist many moons ago and have no intentions on upgrading to a newer unit. Flashers are flashers. When I upgrade next, it’ll be to a livescope potentially. If not, I’ll be fishing with my old FL20.
The 30 has multiple zoom ranges but my 28 is just fine for me. 18 was a work horse but I like the digital quietness and the zoom of the 20 and newer is a good improvement.
Honestly, the thing I like about 28 the most over my 18 is the how much quieter it is. The ticking of the 18 nearly drove me insane at times.
They will all do the job just decide what you want to spend.
ole iowaboy wants to know the best one for zeroing in on bullheads!!!!!

When the ticking starts to turn to auditory hallucinations, I know I’ve been fishing too long without catching. I consider it a feature LOL

I sold it for a couple hundred after I bought another flx30. I figured 4 in the closet was enough. THE 5th unit was sold to a kid down the road.
This is my winter of down sizing and selling, instead of collecting more.
The 12 was a great easy unit but was a back ups back up
About 3 years ago I upgraded to an FLX28 and sold my FL8. I wish that I kept it because the FLX28 is terrible in the shallow water I am fishing this time of year.
I found out this year that the 28 is not good in shallow water.I’m glad i have the 18 and a Helix for those instances.
Glenn for bullheads you need a Marcum.
Get the 28 unless the adjustable zoom window and setting manual depth ranges in one foot increments is important. If so, get a 38. I don’t think I would look at a 30 at this point. Have yet to fish with the 38 to give any first impressions. When I’ve made time in my schedule to ice fish thus far this season, the ice hasn’t cooperated.

The 30 beats the 28. Coming from a guy who owned both but now have sold off the 28s.
My son loves his 30 so far! First Vex we have owned. Its not for me (I dont want a round dial anymore), but its what he wanted and he got a great deal on it and likes it which is most important.
