Are you notified when an update is needed?
No. I check periodically or see it on another site that I frequent.
Anyone else notice this update did not fix SI color palette on Helix 7 as stated in change log?
In reading the change log, none of the fixes seem to apply to my use so on the fence on whether to install or not.
Just a heads-up if you don’t use your Bird during the winter. Don’t do the update until early spring. The last time I tried to update my Helix 10, I followed the instructions exactly and when I inserted the SD card with the update, my unit locked up. I had to disconnect power to shut it down. tried again, same result. Called Humminbird and had to send it in. It was out of warranty, but I argued enough so they fixed it no charge; 3-month warranty on repairs. If I update it again, I’ll wait until early spring so if I have another problem I can get it back and try it out before the 3-month warranty expires.
I’m not sure how you all are updating your units, but I ran into a simmilar issue as Ron last winter with my helix 5 si. After updating, the unit would boot but the transducer wouldn’t fire and the battery was reading 0%. I just updated to the new release from august and it locked up again. I had been inserting the micro sd card while the unit was off because I was under the assumption that if you removed or inserted the sd card while the unit was on, it could corrupt the card, not exactly what i would want to do with a $100+ zerolines card. I reread the instructions and it says that you should power your unit on, let it completely boot and then insert the sd card with the software update. I tried doing it that way and it fixed the issue and seems to be working now.

This is what I’ve always done and have had no problems.
Does anyone know if you can leap frog updates? i.e. not install some of the past updates but install the most current one.
Hey Ron, are you saying that the software update has 3-month warranty?.
NO. I’m saying if you have any issue and have to send it in, do it early spring so if there are other issues within 3 months you will have warranty coverage. If you send it in in January but don’t get out on the water until May, the warranty will have expired before you have a chance to use the unit.
Can anyone help me with updating a new helix 7 g3 ice? I downloaded the update, saved to encrypted sd card, but when I insert the card it only recognizes my mille lacs map I got for free…the unit says it is version 2.030 and it doesnt ask me to update to the 2.110 any ideas?
I have both Garmin and Humminbird, and I don’t remember which but one of those wants you to cut and paste the update to the card. The other wants the card in the computer and when you open the downloaded update it loads the update on the card. Try to see if you open the program with the card in it, it loads it to your SD card.
Make sure you reset back to factory settings before removing the card out of your unit. Then erase the last version on your sd card on your computer before downloading the latest version. Load card in the unit and power unit up and then follow the screen prompts and let it load through all the screens before hitting any buttons. I’ve never had a issue this way.
edit..i was using the wrong damn update. i didnt realize it was different for the ICE units…oofda doesnt look like there is one for the g3 yet :\
Just got an email notice from Humminbird that V2.18 is now out but looks like another one that I don’t need to install.
