USPS service question

Trying to figure out what I should ask for as far as service. 5 years ago I did a change of address for my dad to have all his mail go to my wife’s house. In time, I changed the mailing address for every account.

We reside at my farm, but mailing goes to my other house – so to me that makes sense. Well, USPS stopped all service to my farm. Anything I order , regardless of name on package, is returned to sender. The gal at the post office said I have to do a change of address for me to receive mail. The form would be ALL mail. I only want what is addressed to my farm, not ALL my mail.

I know I’m not the only person to do this. What terminology do I use to get them to understand that?

Do you have a mailbox at the farm?

I ran into a problem with USPS not delivering pkgs to our lake place after I took down the mailbox.

The carrier who originally delivered pkgs to us didn’t care that we didn’t have a mailbox but he retired. The new carrier wouldn’t deliver to us.

I ended up putting the box back out.

Mailbox is there. Short version is we stopped the mail, went to a PO box, that didn’t work for us, then forwarded to my wife’s house as I changed each individual account mailing address.

USPS deactivated delivery to our farm and then see it as no one is living here. They are telling me that I need to transfer my mailing address from my wife’s house to the farm address. I don’t want any of my mail that currently goes to my wife’s to come here.

All I want is if my wife sends an envelope to the farm, or if I order from Amazon/online and its addressed to “anyone at the farm” and the address here, it gets delivered here. How do I activate service without doing a “change of address”? There is no change. I just want mail that is addressed to this address to be delivered here. Unfortunately it will be 99% junk mail but that’s what keeps the burn barrel hot.

When I told her I wanted to activate new service at this address and the name would be “In Solitude XXXXXX, XXXXXX,XXXXXX” she said I can’t do that and that I had to forward a existing customer name/address to this address to re-activate delivery

This whole thing seems strange to me. Is this a policy being initiated by your local post office or something? My oldest son doesnt live at home anymore and he gets mail at our house AND where he is currently living. I guess I dont understand why they cant just send the mail to the address that is on whatever item being sent. I am sure there are a lot of people that have mail being delivered to different addresses.

You’ll likely need to do a change of address to reactivate your farm address. But only do for an individual NOT family. So say if you want three people to go to the farm and not your wife you’ll need to do three separate forms.

I agree. However it comes back to the fact that they discontinued service to my farm address – as if it does not exist. As I’m getting the facts, it seems that the only way to re-activate service to this address is to forward an existing service from a real address somewhere and then send it here. Problem is I don’t have a service anywhere that I want forwarded here.

When I was building in Colorado or Wyoming, I had stuff sent to me all the time because it went to an existing serviced address. Having discontinued service is becoming a major headache on something that should be very simple

That mail forwarding isnt a permanent thing is it? Perhaps that is the only way to get it started again and you can turn if off after a period of time?

Can you call the farm a business name and apply for an address with the business name. Randy Weiland DBA Weiland Farms or something like that.

That’s what I tried to do this morning. Apparently I can’t created a new service for an existing address. She was saying the only way to re-activate is forwarding. I think its BS and there must be a simple solution to this

This is weird. So someone with a cabin and another home, cannot get mail at 2 addresses, I did ? Doesn’t every stitch of land have an address, for 911 purposes ? It is 2 separate addresses… they deliver to the ADDRESS, not the name ? What am I missing ?

I think it’s only for 90 days. I did that about 2.5 years ago when I moved.

When I canceled delivery to my farm a few years ago, they stopped all service to it. PITA to re-establish active service. As for emergency responders, not affected

I have the opinion that its the individual I am working with and not a USPS policy.

It has to be… maybe a DEI hire ? Half the mail I got at the cabin had Resident on it, not even our name. I would ask the Postmaster for the facility.

I wish I could have all my USPS mail returned to sender – especially in election cycles.
