Is anyone using a synthetic oil in the crankcase of their Yamaha or other brand 4 stroke outboard? Please reply with pros and cons if you are using synthetic or have researched doing it. I see Amsoil has a 4 stroke power sports oil on the market but would think any of the name brand products with the proper viscosity rating would work.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that you should not use synthetic oils during the break in period of an engine.
After the break in hours have accumulated they are fine to use.

Personally, I don’t see any advantage unless you’re a guide. The normal fisherman doesn’t put that many hours on a motor. My Yamaha 50 recommends oil change every 100 hours. I doubt that I put that many hours on it in a season. I just change it every fall before it goes in storage. I wouldn’t want to let it sit over the winter with used oil in it.

I use Mobil 1 in my 2008 F90. Might be overkill, but I’m hard on equipment and it gives me peace of mind.
