Used Boat Sales Tax Question

I am buying a used boat in the next week or two. I see that you have to pay sales tax on it. I have also read that you only have to pay the sales tax on the value of the trailer. Is this correct or is it on the total sale price? Thanks for the help.

I thought it was only on the trailer but someone will jump in.

Did a little more research and it looks like it is just on the trailer. Does the number need to be exact or more like a rough estimate? Looked the trailer up online and got $350-420 as a number. Seems a bit low to me. Just want to make sure I do it right. Heard it can be a headache if you dont.

If it is from a dealer you pay sales tax on the total price.

From a private party just on the trailer

Never heard of it being a headache. The DMV agents themselves told me very low numbers to put down when I told them price of the last two boats.

Don’t you have to pay sales tax on the trailer to motor vehicles and tax on the boat to the DNR?

When I bought my used boat from a private party I only had to pay sales tax on the trailer. The party I bought it from and I wrote a slip saying the boat price and the trailer price and went from there. WE said it was worth 450 bucks so tax was minimal.

This is 100% correct IF the boat is purchased in Wisconsin, across state lines. I know firsthand. I cannot speak for in-state purchases.

Yeah you guys were right. I had only heard it was a headache if you estimated it wrong and got the wrong licensing. I am buying it through a private party and he has decided to write the trailer as being worth $300. I’ll take it. Thanks for confirming it for me.
