Looking to buy my first bass boat.
If the average car drives 15k miles a year what is the average amount of hours does an outboard count each year?
Is there a way to find out how many hours an outboard had on it besides taking it to a dealer? Or is that the only way?
    Thank

    Hello Bass thumb,

I am not sure where you are from or how far you are willing to travel for the right boat. I live in SW Wisconsin so the number of hours on a boat could be drastically lower than someone that fishes in Texas for example. So gauging the average number of hours a motor/boat runs per year is even more difficult. I will put more weight into evaluating the condition of the overall package. I think this gives you better insight into how the boat was run and taken cared of.

Sometimes you can check the hours on a motor if Merc has the “Smart Gauges” or if a Yamaha runs the “Command Link”. I believe those ar et correct terms and they would be installed on the boat already. Not sure of Evenrude or any other manufacturers have any similar products when it comes to reading hours. Getting a print from a dealer that can specifically tell you the number of hours and at what RPM ranges all of those hours the motor was run at is not such a bad thing. It is pretty affordable if I remember correctly. Less than $40.00 for sure. I had it done so I could show potential buyers when I was selling my boat.

    Good Luck Shopping.

I think for most guys 40 hours a year on the main motor is quite a bit for Bass boats. I wouldn’t be as concerned about hours as I would be about the overall condition of the boat & trailer.

i wold not worry about hours. I would be more concerns about Maintenance and up keep on the motor. IMHO a motor that runs constantly will not wear out as fast as one that is started up and shut down.
