US / Canada Border opening date ????

I’ve been holding out hope that the US / Canada Border will be back open for travel by June 1st. With each day that passes and with each new extended stay at home order my hope’s are beginning to fade. I thought it would be kind of fun to see what % chance people here think the border will be open by June 1st. Those who don’t think it will be open by the 1st – What day do you think it will be back open to travel.

I’m going to stay positive and say I believe there is a 90% chance that it will be open by June 1st. That’s hard to believe coming from a guy who’s normally a glass almost empty kind of person.

There’s a difference between what I want, what I hope, and what I really believe will happen.

    2% if you’re asking June 1st.

Spent a few days late last week reading Canadian news articles. They’re going to have a tough decision on their hands. On one side is the economic argument and expecting a massive amount of pressure from the U.S. to open.

On the other they look at their southern neighbor as the runaway world leader in cases and those numbers are rising. Tried to put myself in shoes of Trudeau and the national gov’t and in Toronto for the provincial gov’t rather than a fisherman. Now you know where I came up with my completely made up number.

I would say .00001% chance by June, maybe August? Not sure?

I pretty much agree with the two posts above. I have four trips scheduled, june, august, September, october. I am counting on june to not happen, august as 30%. Figuring september and october to be 65%. These are all pure guesses on my part, absolutley no science or logic in play.

Sadly I believe their is a 0.01% chance of June 1. I really don’t believe they will open until September.

Wow – I hope things are not as ugly as some here think. If this situation continues into Aug. and Sept. Both the US and Canadian economies are going to be in a world of hurt. Well after missing my Early June fishing trip, I’ll have to start looking forward to the Late fall trip.

View the Canadian provinces the same as Cook county Mn. Small outdated hospitals. The Canadian government will not risk the population over a few fish no matter what the economy dictates.

I would guess 0% chance for June 1st opening for non-essential crossings. 30% chance July 1st. After that it’s anybodies guess.

    100%!

I’m guessing it’ll be open in two weeks.

I just saw on Ontario’s Northwester Health Unit’s (Kenora/Fort Frances/Dryden) website, that they’ve had 16 positive cases, most recent was on 4/14, and all positive cases have been resolved. But only 2297 tests, with 688 pending, so a small sample size.

That’s good news, but have no clue if it’ll have any influence on when the border is opened. Since I have two trips planned in June, I selfishly hope so.

I will go with .0001 percent by June first as well. Hell we will be lucky to have the Minnesota stay at home order lifted by then.

Border was initially shut down for 30 days on March 21st. Was then extended another 30 days, so it is set to expire May 21st. If extended again, which seems like a given at this point, I’d expect it to be another 30 days, leaving June 21st as the first possible day to enter Canada.

My fishing group keeps in touch with some Canadians that camp at the landing of the lake we fish in August. Supposedly Canadian residents cant even camp at boat landings through the month of June.

There’s another thing to consider, what’s the definition of “open”? Maybe there will be phases before it’s back to pre-pandemic norms.

One of the things we’re seeing across countries is that you can enter but must do a 14 day quarantine on arrival. Talking to a co-worker this morning who got an AHL hockey player as another resident in his house. As a resident he can return to Canada but then 14 day quarantine. He’s also worried if hockey resumes how does he serve that quarantine and will there another 14 day period to serve when he would return to the U.S. So he is living in the states so he can return to his team if hockey resumes.

I’m also following what’s happening with European soccer leagues restarting. Not uncommon for returning foreign players to get a similar 14 day quarantine.

Long post short, if there are 14 day quarantines that doesn’t fit for American anglers doing a week trip at their favorite Canadian Camp.

I’d hate it if I was forced to stay 14 days instead of 7

We go to Canada each Spring and Fall. The guy I go with has already said if the Spring trip does not happen he’s going to extend the Fall trip to at least 2 weeks. I may have to go up with him and then have him bring me to the nearest airport to fly home – not sure if I can swing a 2+ week trip in the fall. To far to drive up separate. For the cost of driving myself 14Hr’s I’m sure I could probably fly for not much more $

Ya it has to be mutual between both countries and I feel like Canada will want to extend it. Remember its not just the MN-Ontario border here, its the ENTIRE border for each country.

Ya’ll are thinking of just fishing, doah

What about all of the business world and trucking products? Are they not also marooned at the border?

Shipping is considered essential and therefore exempt. Same on the Mexico-USA border.

Thanks! I wondered if that wasn’t the case. It does make sense.

I think it will be in monthly increments if/when it is extended, just like the last one. Sucks to try and plan anything but the piecemeal approach is how it has to be done as the progression of this emerges. Next period to watch are the days prior to May 21 as they’ll likely make an announcement several days before it.

Will a boat be able to cross into Canada to fish if staying on US side at Rainy Lake? Assuming we have license & RABC? We have been doing this for many years.

No, border is closed non-essential travel and no difference in planes, trains, automobiles, boats, or dogsleds. There is a thread over in the Rainy forum on exactly this question.

Not 100%, but heard from a pretty good source, if you have reservations at an outfitter, starting June 1, you will be allowed in as essential for their economy. This would entail proof of dates and locations when you cross… Don’t all light me up at once… I am not doing a trip this year, so I really don’t care either way, but I heard this last week.

Nope. Non essential is non essential. Unless for medical or other approved reason for travel. Vacation is not essential. Most lodges here in Manitoba are not opening at all.
