Upper Red What's Working

I just booked a trip to Upper Red for mid-January and I need a refresher course on what lures to use.

Last time I was there the Rippin’ Rap #4 was the most successful lure for me. I don’t remember which color I used so if anyone can say which colors work for them I would appreciate it.

I also plan to buy a variety of slab raps so I’m wondering which size and colors are recommended up there?

Slender Spoons used to be the hot lure there. Is this still the case? Didn’t work for me last time but I’ve seen James and Will kill ’em on them in that lake.

We had luck on rattle reels with a simple octopus hook in red with a minnow. I’m assuming this is still a solid method.

Thanks for any tips you might share. I’m super excited to get back there!

I was there last January and they loved the gold slender spoon with orange in the center. hope this helps!

By the time you go you will get some updated info here. Also stop at the nearest bait shop for hot lures. That has always worked for me when I go to LOTW.

I’ve always done best with Red Rattln’ Flyer spoons, pink is a close second.

Tingler spoon, glow red shiner, glow pink and perch.
Glow red rattlin flyer is always rigged on one rod, as is either a plain red glow hook or a glow red Vertiglo jig for a deadstick or rattle reel line.

Spoons tipped with a minnow head, hook or Vertiglo with a backhooked whole minnow. If things are slow, pound the spoon on the bottom a few times and raise up a few inches and hold still (and hold on).

Also success using a glo orange plain hook, glow green Demon (caught my PB 43″ pike thru the ice on Red with this LOL).

URL is more about keeping your distance from others, being quiet. What worked 10 years ago is still what will work today. I’ve even gone back and tried some of the glo blue baits that we all used during the crappie boom, they still work LOL smile

Great suggestions everyone. I will be doing some shopping soon!
Just received my order of two JT’s Custom rods in the mail today. Can’t wait to try them out.

    Thanks!
