Corps invites public to provide input on Upper Lake Pepin
    economic restoration opportunities

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is hosting an open house in Red Wing, Minnesota, July 11, to discuss a study to improve habitat in and around Upper Pool 4 of the Mississippi River.

The open house will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. with a short presentation at 5:30 p.m., at the Red Wing Public Library Community Room, located at 225 East Ave., Red Wing. Corps of Engineers officials and staff from other resource agencies will be available during the open house to answer questions and listen to feedback.

This study will allow the Corps to investigate opportunities to utilize dredged material from Pool 4 to improve the ecosystem in the same pool. Potential opportunities for the Corps to improve the pool include using dredged material to build islands, dredging backwater areas, creating and/or improving wetlands, stabilizing the shoreline stabilization and planting floodplain forest.

The nearly 600 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, employees working at more than 40 sites in five upper-Midwest states serve the American public in the areas of environmental enhancement, navigation, flood damage reduction, water and wetlands regulation, recreation sites and disaster response. Through the St. Paul District Fiscal Year 2016 $78 million budget, nearly 1,250 non-Corps jobs were added to the regional economy as well as $120 million to the national economy. BK’a summery.

    They have some money.
    They have an area.
    They have goals.
    They have a map.
    They have sand.

What they don’t have is anything close to a plan.

    More to come in 2018.

But I will say, in my opinion Wacouta Bay
    Bay City Flats
    Katrina is the targeted area.

Whether that’s good or bad, I don’t know.

Of all the projects they have done, silting in after the job is done (within a few years) has continued to be an issue. Stoddard is a prime example. Was great right after the project completed, but within a few years silting in became a problem.

The islands in Buffalo City’s Spring Lake continue to look good with no signs of silting yet. They are fairly young, so time will tell.

Again, thanks for attending BK and updating us.

I brought up your very concerns Tim.

It’s the Corps job to ensure this doesn’t happen although we all know, including the Corp that this can’t be totally eliminated.

There’s a ton or should I say “tons” of silt coming down stream and it’s going to settle some place.

IF I were King, I would stop all projects until the MN River was fixed.
Sure it’s more then the MN that’s dropping silt into Pepin and the Gulf of Mexico, but fixing that would help everything from St Paul to Louisiana.
