I had a chance to hunt with my good friend Scott Reed from Purefishing. We did not have the best weather to hunt in with freezing rain and North winds. The birds were very nervous and not even the hens wanted to sit tight for us today. It was a good time and we ended up with 2 roosters over good quality points. Not the best of days as far as #’s but a great way to spend a day with a good friend.Best of luck to all!

    Hey Ryan.
Sorry we couldn’t hook up this weekend. My friend Mike Yager (“Suzuki” on the site) and I hunted the Albert City/Storm Lake area with much success this weekend. We got our 2 person 6 bird limit Sat. by 1:45 and our limit Sunday by 10:30 a.m. We walked into a public area with a lot of trees and thick slough grass on Sunday morning and saw tons of birds. A lot of fun! My 6 1/2 yr old dog went charging after a downed bird through a barbed wire fence on Sunday and it kind of got the best of him. We contacted a Vet in Humbolt that met us at his office and did a great job stitching him up. 10 stitches in 45 minutes and he charged me an unbelievably low price of only $103.50 for everything including the emergency Sunday visit. I tipped him and left him a pair of new deerskin gloves, but it still didn’t seem like enough. He was a great guy and we owe him a bunch!
Here’s a shot of us and some of the birds when we got home. We forgot a camera so we didn’t get any good snow shots!

    Crossing Eyes,

Are those springers or English cockers? They look just like my English cocker. Sounds like a good trip. Hopefully my trip to SD in a few weeks won’t get snowed out. That’s my only worry for planning late season pheasant hunting trips, as you can deal w/ the cold but if it’s too snowy to get anywhere it’s a problem. Liked the picture. It seems like I make a trip to the vet almost every year like that, although as the dog is getting older he’s smarter and a little slower so no trips to the vet this year (knock on wood) Bret

    Bret,
They are English Springer Spaniels. I just shaved them about a week ago so they don’t pick up burs as bad. Also, even though it is snowy and colder, they don’t stay wet with the short hair. They seem to do a lot less shivering like this. They don’t appear too big in the pictures, but they are both 50+ pound dogs so they are on the high end of the size scale for Springers.

Those dogs flush to many pheasants. Can’t even get in a full days hunt!

I think if I would have drove my truck a little farther into that guy’s field at a little higher rate of speed, I may have flushed more birds than the dogs!

Nice looking dogs Crossing eyes. I have to keep my English cocker shaved short too, actually we keep him that way most of the time to keep the shedding around the house down to a minimum. Yours look just like mine, except a little taller and bulkier. Mine is about 30# and can go all day, though is slowing a little w/ age. It’s amazing the thick stuff they can go through, under and over that cause bigger dogs problems. Good luck w/ the rest of the season. Bret
