Back to work today after a long weekend of grouse hunting. We put together two great weekends up in northern MN. We saw far more cars this weekend then opener weekend which was a bit surprising to me (Maybe it was just the nice weather).

Opener weekend there was still lots of cover so we noticed the birds staying put a lot more, thinking we couldn’t see them. That helped increase our percentage of kills to birds seen dramatically. We ended up with 16 birds over 2.5 days.

This last weekend was a bit more difficult, we saw more birds then the first weekend, but a lot more were fly away’s into the woods that we were not able to locate.

We ended up with 12 birds over 2.5 days.

We did a mix of driving and walking with the dogs, and they both seemed to product equally. The dogs definitely got a workout with this warm weather. Picture below of the two that are typically wrestling or chasing sticks around. A few others of cooking fresh grouse over the open fire, nothing better.

Looks delicious. I’ve never had grouse. Well, not Mn ruffed grouse. The birds in SD were a very, very dark meat that I didn’t care for.

You’re missing out John….. Grouse can be very delicious! One way that I’ve discovered is to slice the breast into thin “steaks” and fry them up in a pan with the seasonings of your preference. I make sure that anything I fry up includes butter and garlic. From there, it’s whatever I feel like at the time. Mmmmm… Mmmmm….. SO GOOD!!!

The best eating wild game bird by far. Just have to be careful when cooking to keep the moist.
