Had the worst time ever hunting in north central Minn last Thu-Sun. Got skunked Sat and Sun. That has never happen before. Only ended up with 5. Nice meal for my buddy and I but nothing for the freezer. Fun trip but has us rethinking next year since birds are on the down swing. Weather was a major factor as well but still have never seen so few.

I went out for about an hour in NW Wisconsin and we had 4 flushes with 1 bird taken.

Birds were very skittish for this early in the year, which seemed really weird?

Funny you should mention that. I keep seeing that issue year after year up that way. Wonder if predators are bad and creating that? When windy they will flush long but I constantly see that up there on dead calm perfect days.

It was windy on Saturday when we went out, but we specifically hunted areas that were out of the wind for that reason.

I know the predator population up there is very strong, so that may be the reason.

Went out Saturday in nw Wisconsin flushed 13 birds, most of them seamed skittish don’t know if it was from the bear hunters running dogs up there all week or from preditors

I’ll bet the wind. They are terribly skittish in wind. I think because your sound varies and they cant easily keep track of it. The more I hunt Grouse the more they seem like a fair weather bird. Cant blame them!!!

Suzuki, if you’ve got the time, go up to the Blue Hills State Forest east of Rice Lake. Huge woods and a few hunters but not enough to feel like you’re rubbing elbows with anyone and when I drove through there, I was seeing birds constantly. Numbers are great but I can’t help you on the skittish part….. I’m seeing a little bit of that too but I think on my cabin property it has more to do with losing the underbrush cover. I was up there for a whole week and the “jump” got worse as the week continued…. and the cover was steadily lessening.
