Just got back from 3 days hunting west of Watertown. Had a great time with mixed results. Definately a lot less birds this year. The hen to rooster ratio was about 80% hens. We seemed to have our best luck hunting smaller patches of cover rather than large fields. The corn was coming out fast. It was very dry which added another challenge for the dog. We heard reports that in some isolated spots the birds were down as much as 80%

In my opinion, you have to get to Redfield to really get into some of the best pheasant hunting SD has to offer. I was really surprised on opener how few vehicles were parked at the walk in areas. I’m sure this report didn’t help boost tourism.

Even at it’s worst though, SD is tough to beat for numbers of birds. Got any plans for a second hunt this season?
